Description Chris Irwin 2013-12-06 15:40:39 UTC
Description of problem:

Upgrading a Fedora 19 system to Fedora 20 using `fedup --network 20`. Upgrade utility removed gpk-application (gnome-packagekit-installer), but did not install gnome-software. There was no discoverable graphical way for a user to install software.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
So far, this has happened on both machines I `fedup` to 20.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use Fedora 19
2. fedup --network 20
3. Attempt to install software using the gui

Actual results:
Had to use yum to install gnome-software

Expected results:
Find gnome-software or some other utility to assist with installing applications

Additional info:
Previously had gpk-application installed (was default on F19). fedup removed it (not default on 20), but did not install the replacement.

Comment 1 Rex Dieter 2013-12-06 15:55:57 UTC
diagnosed on irc, seems to be an upgrade path issue with gnome-packagekit. In f20, the gpk-application piece was split into gnome-packagekit-installer subpkg.

Folks upgrading from f19 will end up with neither gnome-software or gnome-packagekit-installer.

Options:

1. Upgraders end up with gnome-packagekit-installer

is to put into gnome-packagekit-installer:

Obsoletes: gnome-packagekit < ...some_evr_to_handle_f19...

Not sure how to handle an upgrade path from gnome-packagekit -> gnome-software , while still providing gnome-packagekit

Comment 2 Chris Irwin 2013-12-06 18:54:12 UTC
Personally, I expected the loss of gnome-packagekit and gain of gnome-software. I'd suggest that that is preferred behaviour. At the very least, I'd expect gnome-software to be added.

Leaving a user with "just" gnome-packagekit-installer isn't currently straightforward either, as the .desktop file has renamed it to "Packages", which does not match the F19 name (and is not immediately discoverable).

I found I have 2 different versions of sqlite 3.8.1-2 and 3.8.2-1 tried sudo yum remove sqlite i686 process ran but showed no errors but did not remove either and still no old package kit or new gnome software when going to activities and entering software.

In addition to the application missing initially after upgrade to F20 going to settings>details.overview I had to choose check for updates and it froze no response, was able to update via yum and after update and reboot it is now auto checking for updates when opened as I understand it should.

I also have this problem. I installed gnome-software manually now. But gnome-software shows no updates, but yum shows hunderts of updates. What am I missing?

Does gnome-software somehow depend on yum-updatesd ?

This is what gnome-software shows in verbose mode ($ gnome-software -v )

any ideas?

Using Settings->Details->Overview just calls /usr/bin/gpk-update-viewer from the gnome-packagekit-updater package. So if you just have gnome-software installed nothing happens... (Probably the same as gpk-prefs does, when clicking the "check now" button)

gnome-software will only show prepared offline updates. You can force the download of packages via terminal "$ pkcon update -d". After this command finishes you will see the available updates in gnome-software.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 09:55:55 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 13:25:12 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
