So, yum fails with "One of the configured repositories failed (Fedora 20 - x86_64 - Updates)" and cannot continue? Is this still happening? Does it help when baseurl= instead of metalink= in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo is used?
Please specify the Yum version when reporting bugs. This looks like a recent problem in -119, when an apparent bugfix broke compatibility with mirrormanager.
