As written in the other bug report this issue is somehow related to bbswitch and bumblebee (nvidia propietary). If anybody wants me to do some further tests let me know as this is highly annoying. The bug is rather severe as it breaks gnome-shell and only because of alt+f2 it remains usable.

Comment 14 Malshan Peiris 2014-01-07 15:07:44 UTC
kernel: 3.12.6-300.fc20.x86_64
vga driver: I'm using radeon VGA using fglrx. (amd catalyst propertairy driver) 13.12

Gnome was working fine with tweaks as well, i did following things today, without logging out a single time.

1) updated whole system
2) installed KDE
3) installed MATE

I logged in to MATE and KDE after a restart, and as i didn't like either i logged back to gnome, and issue comes when trying to get top left hand corner app list. First time gnome session reboots reporting a bug, when i do above again it shows logout button in gray screen saying error is unrecoverable.

can you help me to revert my changes. I removed MATE and removed tweaks reinstalled gnome-shell. but still issue is there. I'll try to remove KDE and see what happens.I have added desktop icons using tweaks. may be MATE messed with it.

If i cannot solve this by this friday i have to either reinstall fedora back or use ubuntu. In the mean while, i'll create a different user and check whether she gets the same issue.

I'm using cogl / clutter / gnome-shell custom built versions without wayland support. (Because the amd driver doesn't support wayland, and it used to get crashed without even coming to gui. The open source driver makes the card overheat and crash within 10 minutes.)

Comment 15 Malshan Peiris 2014-01-07 15:27:16 UTC
new user account didn't make difference. i'm going to try do following:

yum remove gnome-desktop3
yum install gnome-desktop3

and manually install custom wayland off builds. atleast i have KDE running.

Comment 16 Arno Mayrhofer 2014-01-07 15:35:21 UTC
Funnily enough I think the first time I logged into gnome3 after installing bumblebee-nvidia I think it was working too. But I'm not a 100% sure on that. Unfortunately I don't recall what I did that I wanted to restart. Definitely I did not install KDE or MATE.

Malshan, did you try booting into a 3.11 kernel? At least with F19 that removed the issue for me.

Comment 17 Malshan Peiris 2014-01-07 16:56:09 UTC
Hi Arno,

Thanks for the insight. It works now with kernel 3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64

But I'm actually not sure it was caused by 3.12 kernel due to this:
As part of changing kernel process, i had to uninstall vga kernel module from 3.12 first. There it complained about md5sum change in binaries installed. I manually did not do a change hence this is suspicious.

And i recompiled vga kernel module for 3.11 and retstarted, now it works fine.

I'll recompile for 3.12 and see what happens in the weekend, because i went through several intended reboots with 3.12 for 2 days and this issue did not come.

Comment 18 Arno Mayrhofer 2014-01-07 22:29:41 UTC
Okay now I found some more info about the bug. If I log on to a gnome classic shell and click the applications button it works just fine. However, if I press the super key, then this crash occurs. I suppose it has something to do with the activities overlay that should be presented. Once that crash has happened. I can't click on Activities anymore as the same crash happens. Logging out and then in again does not help, only rebooting enables the Activities menu again.

Comment 19 Marco Nolden 2014-01-18 09:44:28 UTC
Same here: nvidia driver and gnome classic shell: pressing the super key immediately triggers the problem

Comment 20 Rob Stryker 2014-03-27 17:34:22 UTC
I also cannot load gnome due to this bug. Same as the others: windows key or clicking applications leads to segfault. I have no other useful information to give, sorry.
