Description Jeffrey Walton 2014-01-01 20:29:34 UTC
Fedora 20, fully updated. Asus Q500A laptop (x64, UEFI, no Secure Boot). Acer S211HL monitor. Gnome classic session is the manager.

When I attempt to connect the Acer monitor to the Asus laptop through the HDMI port in a non-mirrored configuration, the laptop (primary) goes black. During this time, the Acer monitor (secondary) has a normal screen. The mouse moves between the screens.

To login, I can actually use the ENTER key and everything works if I get the blind choreography correct.

Sometimes the primary monitor is 100% black, while other times its 95% black. The login screen is 100% black, while post-login appears to be 95% black. When its operating in near-black mode, I can make out an extremely faint window below.

During this time, I can work off the second monitor. For example, I can right-click and bring up a command prompt (nautilus-open-terminal is installed). Opening 'Display' from 'Gnome Control Center' (via command line gnome-control-center) does not help.

I also noticed that 'Display' from 'Gnome Control Center' does not appear to provide a way to assign primary and secondary monitors (I wanted to try it to see if I could bring both monitors to life at once).

The Asus laptop is multiboot. The other operating systems - Windows 8, Debian 7.3 and Ubuntu 13.04 - have little to no problems with the configuration. (Ubuntu has a minor problem on its login screen, where a vertical black stripe is present on the secondary display. The stripe goes away after login).

Debian 7.3 and Ubuntu 13.04 appear to use a different version of Gnome Control Center.

Comment 10 Jeffrey Walton 2014-01-02 09:29:21 UTC
After running `xev` to see if the Function and Hotkeys were registering, I can now clear the problem by using the Screen Bright Up hotkey.

However, whenerver the display changes (upon boot, upon login, etc), the primary screen goes black and requires use of the Screen Bright Up hotkey.

The workaround (running `xev`) appears permanent across reboots. That is, I only needed to run it once and things kind-of magically started working.

Comment 11 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 10:16:52 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 12 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 14:01:54 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
