Description bob 2014-01-10 21:49:26 UTC
Description of problem:

F20 installation using kmod nvidia drivers. When using the "Folder Layout" for the Plasma Desktop Shell with a user-defined background image, the plasma desktop shell will properly display icons on the desktop only if "System Settings > Desktop Effects > Enable Desktop Effects at Startup" is disabled.

If this setting is enabled, then upon starting KDE the desktop will fade-in but there will be no icons drawn on the dekstop; the desktop appears with the background image and taskbar but no icons are populated onto the desktop.

To get icons to appear on the desktop, one must right-click on the desktop, select Folder Settings, change the Layout to a different value (such as Grid), and then change it back to Folder.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

KDE 4.11.4

How reproducible: Whenever "enable desktop effects at startup" is enabled.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable desktop effects at startup.
2. Configure plasma desktop to Folder mode
3. startx

Actual results:

Fade into desktop with no icons displayed.

Expected results:

Fade into desktop with icons displayed.

Such rendering glitches are clearly graphics driver bugs, especially when they only appear with desktop effects enabled.

Since you are using the proprietary nvidia driver, there is unfortunately no way we can fix the bug in Fedora. Sorry. Please report it directly to NVidia.

There's now a duplicate that claims this can be reproduced also with Nouveau.

I've got a bug update now that someone is interested:

Originally, the bug could be avoided by changing the settings of "System Settings > Workspace Appearance and Behavior > Desktop Effects > Enable Desktop Effects at Startup" so that Desktop Effects at Startup was disabled. Simply disabling the check box made the problem go away.

It isn't that way anymore. At this time there are no settings that can be used to avoid encountering the bug, and juggling the toggles in System Settings is pointless as it produces no effect; every time that I reboot I have to jump through the hoops of changing the desktop type and then reverting back to folder view just to get icons. It's quite a pain. The only way for me to avoid the problem is to leave the PC running 24/7.

Unfortunately, although I knew at one time exactly which KDE software revisions caused the problem to get worse, I no longer have that information. I threw it away because finger-pointing dismissed the bug as an nvidia driver problem and resulted in closure of the bug report.

Sorry that I can't be more help.

(In reply to bob from comment #6)

I can confirm that the desktop icons now disappear at *every* login not just at random.
(Running a fully updated Fedora 20 with dual screens, nvidia card, nouveau driver)

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 10:26:11 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 14:20:55 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
