Description of problem:

"appliance" is supposed to be a deprecated alias for
"direct".  Somehow in Fedora 20 this got broken:

$ LIBGUESTFS_ATTACH_METHOD=appliance libguestfs-test-tool

libguestfs-test-tool: failed parsing environment variables.

Works in 1.22 branch.

This is fixed in libguestfs >= 1.24.5.
