RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Steps to Reproduce: 
Launch Region and Language (Settings -> Region and Language)

 1. Click on "Login Screen".
 2. Click on Language
 3. Select any language
 4. Log out.

Actual results: 
After logout, only "Password:" string is translated. I have to restart gdm.service to get translations of other strings like buttons in user list and menus at top of screen.

Expected results:
GDM interface should be in the language you specified.

Another translation bug: Calendar in GDM stays in English when other language is chosen. Even after gdm.service restart. More precisely, date in full format e.g. "Tuesday Feb 21, 2014" and "February" strings.

Only working exception are translated names for days of the week.

Next GDM calendar issue: Week is starting with Sunday, even when in chosen language (and associated region) week starts with Monday, e.g. Czech.

I think what i'd like is for this patch to land in pam_systemd:

so the language is updated in the greeter for "free" when the pam session gets opened in preparation for starting the greeter.

reassinging to systemd, but you guys feel strongly against it, then i can bodge something up in GDM.

This would be nice to fix in systemd, but there is still no upstream solution and we will not make it till 7.0.

Sorry, but we can't use Tom's patch. This data cannot be stored in the home directory if gdm shall be able to access it, since the home directory might only be unlocked/mounted when the user logs in.

accounts-daemon stores this meta information in /var, which is a possible approach.  sssd might have soemthing too, but I think for now this needs to be figured out between gdm and accounts-daemon. Assigning back.

well, i don't really care about the part that checks the home directory.  Anyway, not a big deal, i'll just had some code to gdm.
