Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Najmuddin Chirammal 2014-02-10 19:29:29 UTC
Description of problem: Creating system accounts/groups on IdM environment takes long time, (bug #1020905). Request to set a min_id if the provider is IPA. (min_id > SYS_GID_MAX)

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. NA

Actual results: Currently sssd uses the default min_id (1) for ipa provider.

Expected results: If ipa provider is used, sssd should use higher min_id by default.

The only catch where this wouldn't work is when the POSIX IDs were migrated from LDAP -or- there is a trust setup in place and the trusted AD has POSIX IDs below 1000. Maybe this could be solved with a one-time search after startup, maybe we'll just document the issue. Needs more discussion with the other developers.

Also, one possible alternative might be to set a more sensible defaults for "groupadd -r"/"useradd -r". I have no idea why they scan the ID space so aggressively.

Comment 3 Jakub Hrozek 2014-02-10 22:10:43 UTC
Tomas, do you know why does shadow-utils first search the whole GID space when adding a system group and only then pick the first unused? Is there a reason to not pick the first unused without scanning the whole ID space?

Also when looking at find_new_gid() in shadow-utils, they seem to be using getgrent() for non-system groups. That's not going to work with sssd at all by default, we don't support group enumeration with the default settings.

It scans only the range of system GID space and not the whole ID space. The reason is to lower the possibility of reusing gids of deleted groups (of course if you delete the last group you previously added, this will not work). I think we should keep this behavior as it was established for a long time.

It does not matter much as long as the space used by the LDAP groups is sufficiently in high ID numbers. The sysadmin has chance to configure maximum group ID allowed for user groups in /etc/login.defs. The current GID_MAX value is 60000.

Thank you taking your time and submitting this request for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Unfortunately, this bug was not given a priority and was deferred both in the upstream project and in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Given that we are unable to fulfill this request in following Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases, I am closing the Bugzilla as DEFERRED. To request that Red Hat re-considers the decision, please re-open the Bugzilla via appropriate support channels and provide additional business and/or technical details about its importance to you.

Note that you can still track this request or even contribute patches in the referred upstream Trac ticket.
