Previously, passwords with ':' or '\\' characters were not accepted by postgresql-8.4. Now, passwords with special characters are accepted by both Red Hat Enterprise Linux postgresql-8.4 and versions 9 and above.

This bug is currently attached to errata RHBA-2014:17286.
