Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

lvm partition screenshot

Description
unknown error shows when install rhel7.0 guest with lvm partition and virtio scsi lun disk

Version:
qemu-kvm-1.5.3-50.el7.x86_64
libvirt-1.1.1-25.el7.x86_64
virt-manager-0.10.0-18.el7.noarch

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Launch virt-manager.
2.Try to install rhel7.0 guest,choose http or iso installation,use tree:RHEL-7.0-20140226.0
3.Use a usb disk as storage disk,set the device type of disk as virtio scsi lun.
3.When the installation process goes to partition GUI,choose "create lvm automatically",then click done.
4.Unknown error shows: FormatCreateError:('format failed:1','/dev/mapper/rhel-root')-anaconda,details see the screenshot.
5.The xml of the guest shows as:
    <disk type='block' device='lun'>
      <driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='none'/>
      <source dev='/dev/sdb'/>
      <target dev='sda' bus='scsi'/>
      <alias name='scsi0-0-0-0'/>
      <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='0'/>
    </disk>
    <controller type='scsi' index='0' model='virtio-scsi'>
      <alias name='scsi0'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/>
    </controller>

Actual results:
As described.

Expected results:
rhel7.0 guest with virtio scsi lun disk can be installed successfully.

Additional info:
1.If I set the format type as ext4,the same error shows.
2.The issue only occurs when using lvm partition and can not reproduce on standard partitions.
3.I can use the same usb disk to install rhel7.0 guest with lvm partition and virtio lun disk successfully.
4.I can use physical disk to install rhel7.0 guest with lvm partition and virtio lun disk successfully.

The error only occurs when using lvm partition and I can install rhel7 guest using standard partitions with the same usb disk.
So I think it is not something of hardware,I tested the issue with 2 usb disks and 2 hosts,the same error shows.

Comment 14 David Lehman 2014-03-31 15:56:37 UTC
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with LVM.

Here is the error:

02:59:15,942 INFO program: Running... mkfs.xfs -f /dev/sda2
02:59:16,030 INFO program: mkfs.xfs: pwrite64 failed: Input/output error

Here is the corresponding section of the syslog:

Note the times. This is not related to LVM, but rather to hardware errors.
