Description Scott K Logan 2014-03-07 02:10:42 UTC
Description of problem:
When the user list is disabled as is necessary for many-user environments, the username box appears as expected. After typing the username and hitting "next," a second username box appears.

Users expect that after the username comes the password, and end up typing their passwords in cleartext in the box. Worse yet is when they fail to notice it and hit enter, causing a failed authentication and their password in the logs.

If the user notices the problem and types their username a second time, they are able to login correctly after inputting their password on the next (third) text prompt.

Discovered on our lab machines, where NIS is used (hence disabling user list) and home directories are shared (though neither seem to make a difference).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-shell-3.10.3-1.fc20 up to gnome-shell-3.10.4-1.fc20 (current)

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Allow the screen to blank while at the login prompt
2. Wake the display (key press, mouse, etc)
3. Input a username and hit "enter"

Actual results:
Username prompt re-appears

Expected results:
Password prompt appears

Additional info:
The bug is not present immediately after reboot. The screen must blank first.

I've seen this happen often as well. The laptops are using freeipa for authentication with the user list disabled.

Same problem here :

mine is here -> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1112548

other is here -> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1092274

Comment 3 James Hogarth 2014-07-21 10:24:33 UTC
This appears to be related to an upstream bug here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729246

There is a patch listed in that bug as a potential fix.

Given the high likelihood of users entering their password in the user box (and consequently it being saved in plain text logs and sealed journal logs) I'd suggest this is an actual security issue and although 'unconfirmed' upstream I suggest that it's worth patching into Fedora 20 sooner rather than later.

Having applied the patch Jan Hacker provided in the upstream bug the username prompt is not reappearing.

Comment 4 James Hogarth 2015-02-27 02:19:08 UTC
Upstream have merged the patch to fix this.

Any chance of getting this into F20 so I can stop overriding the code in puppet?

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 11:10:55 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 19:19:47 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
