Description Germano Massullo (Thetra) 2014-03-29 13:08:37 UTC
Description of problem:
HPLIP.gui continues asking for propertary plugin of a P1505 printer even if I installed it many times.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
hplip-3.13.11-4.fc20.x86_64

Comment 1 Tim Waugh 2014-07-21 14:26:22 UTC
Which HPLIP command are you running?

Comment 2 Germano Massullo (Thetra) 2014-09-01 12:18:57 UTC
I am using the HP-LIP GUI, not shell commands.
I installed the printer, then installed the propertary plugin by HP-LIP interface. After that, HP-LIP sometimes forgets about that plugin and wants me to install it to let the printer work

Comment 3 Tim Waugh 2014-09-01 12:28:08 UTC
What does 'rpm -q hplip' say? Just checking that you still see the problem with the latest update, hplip-3.14.6-5.fc20.

hplip-3.14.6-5.fc20.x86_64

Comment 5 Tim Waugh 2014-09-08 10:14:22 UTC
What's the exact message you see?

Comment 6 Germano Massullo (Thetra) 2014-09-08 10:32:30 UTC
In HP-LIP GUI under Action tab, among the other stuff, I always see "Install propertary plugin" entry, even if I just installed it.
When the printer ceases to work, I solve by reinstalling the propertary plugin, using the button Action tab -> Install propertary plugin.
"It ceases to work" means a situation like the following one:
I try to print a document, the computer says "print job completed" but the printer never started printing, OR sometimes the job stalls in queue.

Comment 7 Tim Waugh 2014-09-10 10:11:53 UTC
If you hover over the 'Install Required Plugin' or 'Install Optional Plugin' menu entry, what exactly does the tooltip say?

The mouse pointer (not shown on the screenshot), does not trigger any tips on the requested menu entry

Comment 9 Tim Waugh 2014-09-10 14:38:06 UTC
OK. It's meant to. Reported upstream:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1367774

It will always show the 'Install Required Plugin' action, even if the plugin is already installed. The tooltip text changes though, depending on whether it is installed.

What does 'grep plugin /etc/hp/hplip.conf' say?

So now we need to diagnose this situation. Are you able to reproduce this reliably? If so, please run: su -c 'cupsctl --debug-logging'
Now print the document.
Afterwards, su -c 'cupsctl --no-debug-logging'
and attach /var/log/cups/error_log to this bug report.

error_log

> grep plugin /etc/hp/hplip.conf
returns nothing

I already had debug mode enabled, so I directly attach the log without having to print again. Keep in mind that there are two printers configured on the system, please consider P1505 only

Comment 11 Tim Waugh 2014-09-11 10:54:21 UTC
You didn't print a document during that error_log section, so there's no information about what goes wrong when you print a document.

error_log_number2

I don't think you will find any error because the system said that the printing action has been completed successfully (but the printer did not print)

Can you please try using the 'hp-firmware' command, and let me know if it restores functionality?

May be the same as bug #1033952.

Comment 14 Germano Massullo (Thetra) 2014-10-21 17:01:02 UTC
Same behaviour, with HP-LIP that complains about "Unable to communicate with printer HP_LaserJet_P1505."
The USB cable is in perfect conditions

Comment 16 Tim Waugh 2014-10-22 14:56:04 UTC
Sorry, confused. Am I reading that correctly, that hp-firmware complains "Unable to communicate with printer"?

Comment 18 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 11:24:11 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 19 Germano Massullo (Thetra) 2015-09-30 16:34:10 UTC
On Fedora 22 HPLIP-GUI still shows "Install propertary plugin" but once you have installed it, if you click again on that button, you will get a message like "HP propertary plugin has been already installed. Do you want to install it again?"
