Description bericson 2014-04-16 02:07:16 UTC
Description of problem:
When I create a new user, log into Gnome as the new user, and go into overview mode, the dash is off-centered (the top of the dash is below horizontal center and extends beyond the bottom of the screen) and while the top of the workspace selector is about where I'd expect (near the top of the screen), the bottom of it, too, extends below the screen. Note that new applications launched will be invisible and workspaces "below" the screen are not visible; the notifications area is, however, properly displayed at the bottom of the screen.

No amount of fiddling (logging out and back in, rebooting, changing screen resolution, forcing the dash to be smaller by opening lots of applications, adding workspaces, etc.) fixes the dash/workspace selector. I can get the dash to "move" somewhat and can also get it to bounce back and forth between two positions, but I can't get it centered.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
I can reproduce this on three different machines, each with different native screen resolutions, and each running different video drivers. On all three, existing users are unaffected (dash and workspace selector display properly), but any new user gets an unusable overview with the dash below-center and the dash and workspace selector extending beyond the screen.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a new user (either via the Gnome app or using the command)
2. Log into Gnome as the new user
3. Enable overview mode.

Actual results:
Dash and workspace selector will be improperly displayed and partially off-screen.

Expected results:
Centered, properly sized dash and workspace selector.

Additional info:
This is a new user with no extensions. Existing users (users created "long ago" but still when Fedora 20 was installed) are fine. Note that 2 of the 3 systems I can reproduce this on were clean Fedora 20 installs while the third was an upgrade.

I am unable to find differences between gsettings, etc. for existing users that work and new users that don't.

I have included an screenshot showing the issue.

Sorry, I should also have mentioned -- and the image I attached demonstrates -- that running apps are also displayed below center. In the image, you can see that the "welcome" app is partially off-screen. (I would have edited the description, but I'm not sure I can.)

I am also experiencing this issue, at least symptom-wise. In my case, I would qualify the reproducibility conditions as such: the problem does not manifest until I either mouse over the workspace switcher in overview mode, or open an application (doesn't appear to matter which one) on the second virtual workspace. Merely moving to the second workspace via keyboard navigation (alt+ctrl+down arrow) does not trigger this misbehavior; it only happens when using the mouse in overview mode. Fortunately, I'm finding that if I log out and back in, it behaves normally until I do one of the two things previously mentioned. This seems to have started doing this about a month ago, iirc. So I'm a little suspicious of a recent update / change at about that time frame.

It's almost like an event handler relating to the workspace switcher is doing some kind of erroneous resizing, affecting the size of everything shown in the standard overview, except the top bar, or some such nonsense...

If I issue the 'r' or 'restart' command at the alt+f2 prompt, it resets the overview display elements to normal after re-loading the gnome shell. Just an fyi.

A few quick updates, for posterior, er, I mean posterity.

This problem appears to have gone away as of one of the fedora version 20 live-respins late last fall, afaict. I first noticed the problem's absence while troubleshooting, running a live desktop environment, about that time frame. This problem also does not appear to be present in fedora 21, not that I've yet encountered.

Other sidenotes: This problem was happening on a laptop installation where the laptop has a somewhat uncommon aspect ratio and display dimensions. Yet, on the same laptop, the problem also was not manifest when running a gnome-desktop fullscreen via a virtualbox. While using gnome inspector to troubleshoot, I noticed abnormally large "y" dimension values in the workspace list's container widget heirarchy. These values would grow even larger when the problem conditions were triggered. In my mind, this would account for the application windows re-sizing miscalculation in the overview. I spent more than enough time troubleshooting, trying to track down the exact lines of code responsible for the miscalculation and learned a lot. But, as far as I'm concerned, this bug report can be closed, for aforementioned reasons.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 11:35:06 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 20:07:28 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
