workspaces thumbnails in overview too narrow with large number of workspaces

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #982315 +++ Description of problem: The strip of workspace thumbnails in the Gnome Shell Overview screen gets narrower and narrower as you create more and more workspaces until it eventually becomes invisible. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-shell-3.8.4-31.el7.x86_64 How reproducible: every time Steps to Reproduce: 1. open a gnome-terminal window on workspace #1 and check overview 2. open a gnome-terminal window on workspace #2 and check overview 3. open a gnome-terminal window on workspace #3 and check overview 4. repeat until the workspace thumbnail strip in the overview disappears (the number of workspaces needed depends on your screen resolution) Actual results: the workspaces in the overview are only a few pixels wide or completely invisible Expected results: the workspaces overview do not disappear Additional info:
It works correctly with gnome-shell-3.10.4-2.fc20 in Fedora 20
