Fixed In Version: openstack-nova-2014.1-3.el7ost
Doc Type: Bug Fix
Doc Text:
Previously, Compute's /etc/release file incorrectly listed the vendor as "Fedora Project" and the product as "OpenStack Nova", which then propagated into the SMBIOS for VMs. This meant that Satellite did not correctly recognize launched VMs, which meant that entitlements did not work correctly. With this update, Compute's release information has been corrected to specify "Red Hat" and "OpenStack Compute", respectively. Satellite now correctly recognizes OpenStack VMs, and therefore entitlements now work as well.

Description Stephen Gordon 2014-05-22 19:44:36 UTC
Description of problem:

Originally reported in a comment on Bug # 1077123 the /etc/nova/release file in openstack-nova-common-2014.1-2.el7ost.noarch.rpm from the latest puddle lists:

[Nova]
vendor = Fedora Project
product = OpenStack Nova
package = 2.el7ost

Depending on when we determine we're prepared to act on Bug # 1061738 to reset the SMBIOS strings the values should be:

1)

vendor = Red Hat
product = RHEV Hypervisor

2)

vendor = Red Hat
product = OpenStack Compute

The values currently in the file are wrong in either case...

Comment 1 Chris Duryee 2014-05-22 19:58:47 UTC
The spacewalk and sat 5.6 code currently check for "RHEV Hypervisor", "OpenStack Nova" or "OpenStack Compute" in the product name (confirmed w/ sherr). I think just changing the vendor field to "Red Hat" will do the trick.

Comment 2 Stephen Gordon 2014-05-22 20:02:42 UTC
Please don't, we specifically agreed to move to using Red Hat and OpenStack Compute. The fact that there is handling for OpenStack Nova doesn't mean it's the value we want to use downstream.

Comment 3 Stephen Gordon 2014-05-23 13:53:43 UTC
Ami can I get a qa_ack+ for this, we consider this a blocker.

Comment 9 gaoshang 2014-05-29 06:26:27 UTC
After running "yum update spacewalk-backend" on Satellite 5.6, Open Stack instance can be properly recognized as a guest now, thanks.
