Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because
the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
Red Hat Satellite engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on Satellite to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs will be migrated starting at the end of May. If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/SAT-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.
Description of problem:
Similar to Cobbler in Satellite 5, Satellite 6 needs official review and clarification of supported usage (what's supported what isn't) in the product documentation to clearly state supported usage of the components - Puppet, Pulp, Foreman, Katello, Candlepin (especially the first 3), since there are upstream capabilities which is not used/tested in Satellite 6. This would help customers stay in supported configurations as well as unnecessary support load.
Sample documentation for Satellite 5.6 supported cobbler usage for reference:
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Satellite/5.6/html/Getting_Started_Guide/chap-Getting_Started_Guide-System_Provisioning.html#sect-Getting_Started_Guide-System_Provisioning-Cobbler

Since this issue was entered in Red Hat Bugzilla, the release flag has been
set to ? to ensure that it is properly evaluated for this release.
Here is our proposed support policy:
a. Puppet
Satellite 6 delivers supported puppet packages. The installer allows users to install and configure Puppet Masters as part of capsules. The server installs hiera, which can be used to refine how puppet manifests are applied. Any puppet manifest which runs on a puppet master using hiera and a puppet master is supported by Red Hat. Red Hat will support the use of Satellite 6 as an External Node Classifier with other puppet installs, but the installation and configuration is left up to the customer.
b. Pulp
Pulp is the content management subsystem within Satellite 6. Use of Pulp is to be interacted via the Satellite 6 WebUI, CLI and API only. Direct modification or interaction with Pulp's local API or database is unsupported and can cause irreparable damage to the Satellite 6 databases.
c. Foreman
Foreman is the upstream component that comprises a large amount of core functionality within Satellite 6 from the WebUI container, users, organizations, security and other significant functions. Satellite 6 includes components, configuration and functionality to provision and configure operating systems other than Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Users are permitted to utilize this functionality within Satellite 6 but it will be unsupported by Red Hat. Foreman can be extended using plugins. Only plugins which are delivered by Red Hat, and are not in the Red Hat Satellite Optional channel, are supported.
d. Katello
Katello is the upstream component for Satellite 6's Content and Subscription user interface and API. Katello is wholly contained by Satellite 6's UI, API and database and there is no supported method for interacting directly to Katello itself that is not already available via the Satellite 6 API, WebUI and CLI. Katello may in the future offer functionality for management of non-Red Hat content types but these content types will be unsupported by Red Hat until publicly stated otherwise.
e. Candlepin
Candlepin is the subscription management subsystem within Satellite 6. Use of Candlepin is to be interacted via the Satellite 6 WebUI, CLI and API only. Direct modification or interaction with Candlepin's local API or database is unsupported and can cause irreparable damage to the Satellite 6 databases.
