I've seen a similar issue and it would be great if there was a reliable way to reproduce this.
I'm getting this error from time to time while rsync'ing my Mailbox folder. I guess there can be some UTF-8 combinations that make this happen. I have just done a full rsync, but I haven't found any specific mail to reproduce this problem.

I think issues like this should be handled first by upstream and with a good reproducer. I don't think we can provide any help here.
