when I log into kde and my audio starts, kde crashes with an error message about kcminit. Then it returns at the login screen. I have an integrated audio chipset Intel 82801CA on a notebook IBM T30. I downloaded all available updates of Fedora.

the backtrace does not say about the problem. It's not reproduceable on many machines here. How does the error message look? Could you please check if you have enough space in your home and /temp directory.
I have enough free space on home and /temp. I notice that if I set in control panel to not start Arts server on startup and I chek this option after Kde was started my audio works. If I do this, even if I log out and relog in (so kde starts with arts server this second time) everything is ok. If I restart the machine it crashes: sometime only the audio doesn't function and no message appear (only do some noises on startup), sometime the audio doesn't function and the error message appear, sometime (rarely) all freezes and I need to reset).
It will help me to debug this problem, if you could send me the $HOME/.xsession-errors if you use KDE/GDM for login. Could you please try KDE 3.2 in rawhide. Does it fix this problem.
Created attachment 96615 [details] .xsession-errors file after I forced a /root filesystem control at startup, now the audio works but not at every startup. I will try to install kde 3.2 as suggested
I've installed Kde 3.2beta and now seems to work...
