The origins of this goes back to bug #821062  "Pure Qt applications can't use KDE styles outside of KDE"


Hrm, does anyone remember why we still do explicit QT_PLUGIN_PATH munging to include multilib paths?  afaict, that is no longer required or at least not since we incorporated,

I've historically been very good at confusing myself every time I revisit this, but if we can't come up with reasons to keep it, I'm tempted to remove the multilib QT_PLUGIN_PATH munging from both /etc/profile.d/kde.* and /usr/bin/startkde , which should resolve this.

as i remember, it's was the problem that kde theme (oxygen) doens't work x86_64 when the user launches 32bit qt app like skype.

i'm fine with Removing this hack.

OK, I can confirm skype works as expected without any QT_PLUGIN_PATH hacks/manipulation now, so I'll go ahead and remove them.
