Description Paul DeStefano 2014-07-03 04:25:58 UTC
Description of problem:
Sometime in May 2014, updates to F20 broke previously working sound.

Pulseaudio seems fine, shows working sound in level monitor even when no signal is present on external jacks. Also, instructions to disable pulseaudio (yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio, see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_sound_problems) had no effect. Checked all ALSA and PA mixers.

Sounds does work on AMD/ATi HD7870, however, when enabled. This was previously disabled, but now is in used because other devices is broken.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
1.0.27.2-2.fc20

How reproducible:
Hasn't worked since it stopped working despite many efforts.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install F20 on system with Realtek(R) ALC 892 sound card
2. Update F20
3.

Actual results:
Sound stops working after upgrade

Expected results:
Sound should continue working as it does on fresh install.

Anybody recognize this? It's been months since this started. I'd also be interested in any updated troubleshooting procedures as the one I mention didn't help and seemed out-of-date.

Comment 2 Paul DeStefano 2014-11-17 04:52:02 UTC
I can't do this test right now, but I will; just need time.

I can report, however, that 3.16.6-203 still shows the problem. I'm confident 3.17 will be the same, as changelog for kernel doesn't show any updates to snd, but I need to time verify.

you have to provide pulseaudio verbose log which indicate the jack is plugged and unplugged rapidly if your problem is related to jack detection

check your comuter chassis have a hda front audio panel

I don't understand your comment.

The links you posted don't lead to instructions on how to send pa verbose log. I will try to find on my own and send.

I don't have any reason to think this is related to jack detection, for one thing.

What about front audio? Yes, I have that. Both used to work, but now, neither front or rear audio work, now, because of this problem.

pulse audio verbose log

Well, I tried what was described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log

I don't think it worked, but perhaps you can tell. Running PA in this mode broke all audio, so it is not like the problem I normally experience.

Comment 6 Paul DeStefano 2015-01-11 07:02:32 UTC
Exact same behavior after upgrade to F21. Only now, displayport doesn't seem to deliver audio to monitor speakers either. Now I have no sound at all from my computer. Please help.

Raymond,

Can you please tell me more about troubleshooting? I will do all the work, but I'm lost.

Comment 7 Paul DeStefano 2015-02-23 17:36:09 UTC
Just an update. I was able to restore sound through the DisplayPort, so at least I have sound through monitor speakers.

Still no sound through on-board audio.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 21 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 21. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '21'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 21 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
