Additional info: The drive was taken out of a Proxmox VE 3.1 server. Proxmox VE 3.x is based on Debian 7.x (Wheezy). LVM was installed by the proxmox installer. Comment on attachment 917628 [details] Strace output for vgscan that fails In strace_vgscan.err I can see that the error output line: 'write(2, "Parse error at byte 1587 (line 1"..., 53Parse error at byte 1587 (line 101): unexpected token) = 53' is created at line 901
The tools are complaining that an illegal token (character, word or other element) appeared in the LVM metadata read from the device. An strace just records the system calls made by a process so it's not very helpful for understanding a problem like this where we're reading unexpected data from the devices (as a first cut the output of '<lvmtool> -vvv' is usually a better starting point). To understand what's happening here it would help to see the metadata from the devices; you can either grab this using 'dd' (~1M or so from the start of each PV) or use the '-m' option to lvmdump: $ sudo lvmdump -m [sudo] password for bmr: Creating dump directory: /root/lvmdump-localhost.localdomain-20140714115540 Gathering LVM & device-mapper version info... Gathering dmsetup info... Gathering process info... Gathering console messages... Gathering /etc/lvm info... Gathering /dev listing... Gathering /sys/block listing... Gathering LVM metadata from Physical Volumes... /dev/sda2 Creating report tarball in /root/lvmdump-localhost.localdomain-20140714115540.tgz... Bear in mind that depending on the previous content of the disks it's possible that other data will be present in the metadata captures; use the 'private' flag when attaching the tarball if you'd like to restrict access to it.

Thankyou for your rapid and informative reply Bryn. I can today add a few more datapoints. 1) I tried to examine the LVM partition with gparted but it barfed with similar error. [root@#localhost ~]# yum info gparted Loaded plugins: langpacks, refresh-packagekit Installed Packages Name : gparted Arch : x86_64 Version : 0.18.0 Release : 1.fc20 Size : 6.1 M Repo : installed From repo : updates 2) So I booted with gparted live iso image: gparted-live-0.18.0-3-amd64.iso That worked. 3) I booted with Centos Live iso: CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-KdeLive That worked. 4) As you suggested I ran 'lvmdump -m' Output pasted below: [root@#localhost ~]# lvmdump -m /sbin/lvmdump: line 97: test: too many arguments Creating dump directory: /root/lvmdump-#localhost.localdomain I spent a while looking for the private attachment feature, but I stopped when I found this: http://www.bugzilla.org/features/#private Private Attachments and Comments If you are in the "insider group," you can mark certain attachments and comments as private, and then they will be invisible to users who are not in the insider group. Users will know that a comment was hidden (because the comment numbering will look something like "1, 2, 3, 5" to them), but they will not be able to access its contents. If posting of private attachments can be enabled then I am happy to do so. Guessing from the appearance of all those lvmdump warnings- file: K8.localdomain-20140714124404.tgz might not anyway be so useful. Do let me know if there is anything else that I can do to aid in diagnosing this bug. many thanks, Colin.
One problem here is that you have a '#' character in your hostname: [root@#localhost ~] ^ It's not strictly illegal for the system hostname (although hash is forbidden in DNS names) but it can cause problems for programs that don't correctly handle the required escaping or sanitisation (which appears to include lvmdump).
TBH, I didn't think that there originally was # in the hostname! IIRC - The Proxmox server was (unimiginatively) named localhost.localdomain I plugged that harddrive into my workstation to retreive the VM images stored on it, so it looks like somthing has gone wrong with the naming along the way.

I'll try to reproduce this on a test system. Do you know what version of lvm2 is included in proxmox?
"looks like database table data - probably left over from a previous use of the disk although if it was written later ... it may have overwritten volume group metadata". Looking at the full output though this is not the case; the complete set of metadata is there, it's just not clear why the parser is choking on it.
As it happens I have just yesterday freshly installed a new server with the same Proxmox version. So I can run some diagnostic on it if you would tell me what you would like. thanks Colin.
Can you upload the output of a command with -vvvv added to the command line?
yup. cando. If you paste here what you want me to exceute, I will run it when I get back from lunch. ;-)
Could you attach the output of the command 'vgscan -vvvv' please?

ok, so the problem appears to be in the binary. So now - the metadata were generated on 3.16.0-0.rc4.git1.1.fc21.x86_64 - and they are normally readable on my x86_64 platform. But you run this on some virtual server - what is endianess and actual CPU in use ?

Maybe it is not important, but I notice that the Problematic drive has an msdos partition table which must be a hangover from a former life in as a Fedora box. The Freshly installed Proxmox31 gets gived only the LVM volumes, no Partition Table.
>So now - the metadata were generated on 3.16.0-0.rc4.git1.1.fc21.x86_64 - and they are normally readable on my x86_64 platform. But you run this on some virtual server - what is endianess and actual CPU in use ? I am not entirely sure exactly what you are askeing here. The Problematic Drive came from an AMD64X6 server Running native x86_64

Created attachment 917964 [details] LVM config - snipped from attachment dd_dev_sda1.bin 0000:2000 to 0000:2640 Bryn attached a link to a pastedbin of the extracted LVM config text but I don't see it now so I made another one with okteta. will attach for completeness, in case its useful.
Could we see the output of 'uname -a' from the machine on which you're having this problem, and also 'date'?
(In reply to Zdenek Kabelac from comment #23) > So problematic text/char for your binary - 8192 + 1587 -> offset 0x2633 > is 0x09 But it's not the on-disk metadata causing this error: that has already been read off disk and parsed successfully prior to the error. The error is while parsing an internally-generated representation of the metadata which will include the machine's *own* hostname as returned by uname(2) and ctime(time(NULL)) and also relies on alloca().
I can reproduce a similar error along these lines.
Parse error at byte 1588 (line 101): unexpected token
LVM does not cope with hostnames that span several lines...

There are 2 commented out lines in /etc/hostname :-( Now deleted. Thankyou for spotting this issue. :-)
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '20'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
