RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Red Hat Product Errata RHBA-2015:0501 0 normal SHIPPED_LIVE util-linux bug fix and enhancement update 2015-03-05 16:20:51 UTC

Description Andy Grimm 2014-10-03 16:02:19 UTC
Description of problem:

A command like "partx -u 2 /dev/vda" will always fail due to some incorrect logic in upd_parts.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

util-linux-2.23.2-16.el7.x86_64

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot a system with a disk with 2 or more partitions on a disk (which are in use).
2. Run "partx -v -u <partno> <device>" where <partno> is any valid partition number other than 1, and <device> is the disk device

Actual results:

partition: 2, disk: /dev/vda, lower: 2, upper: 2
/dev/vda: partition table type 'dos' detected
partx: /dev/vda: updating partition #2 failed: Device or resource busy
partx: /dev/vda: error updating partition 2

Expected results:

partition: 2, disk: /dev/vda, lower: 2, upper: 2
/dev/vda: partition table type 'dos' detected
/dev/vda: partition #2 resized

Additional info:

Launchpad bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1244662
Patch: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.utilities.util-linux-ng/8385

I have not tested building with the patch yet, but I have confirmed that in Fedora 21, where util-linux is new enough to contain the above fix, the issue is not present.

Comment 12 Irving Popovetsky 2015-03-06 22:56:10 UTC
Question: Is there an equivalent bug report open for RHEL6? It suffers from the same issue and I'd love to see that fixed as well.
