Description of problem: I have an Epson Stylus Photo PX720WD printer. This generally works OK with the epson-inkjet-printer-escpr drivers, but I can't get the unit to print on both sides of the paper (the printer has a "duplex" unit.) If I use the "correct" PPD for the model, "Two-sided" options are grayed out in printing GUIs. I've also tried setting printer type to "Epson Stylus Photo PX730" (via the management interface under localhost:631 or the "Printer configuration" tool.) I could then request two-sided printing, but it had no effect. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 1.3.1-1.1lsb3.2.el6 How reproducible: Every time Steps to Reproduce: Obvious, I hope. When I mention "Two-sided" options in GUIs, I refer to what's for instance found under the "Page setup" tab in the standard GNOME/Gtk print dialog, which is popped up when you select "File->Print..." in applications like gedit and firefox. Actual results: Only one-sided printing is available. Expected results: Duplex printing is possible. Additional info: I realise that this is probably an upstream issue, but I can't figure out where to report problems (besides here.) Note in particular that http://avasys.jp/english/linux_e/ just contains a note about termination of the Linux driver service. Hopefully someone else will know what to do;-)
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.3-1.1lsb3.2.el6 has been submitted as an update for Fedora EPEL 6. https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.3-1.1lsb3.2.el6
I'm not sure that this update will fix it, but it lists that it added support for the XP-720 Series (which I think yours is).
Package epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.3-1.1lsb3.2.el6: * should fix your issue, * was pushed to the Fedora EPEL 6 testing repository, * should be available at your local mirror within two days. Update it with: # su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=epel-testing epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.3-1.1lsb3.2.el6' as soon as you are able to. Please go to the following url: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2014-3721/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.3-1.1lsb3.2.el6 then log in and leave karma (feedback).
I've tried this, but it doesn't seem to help, unfortuntately. With printer type "XP-720", the "Two-Sided" printing option is enabled, but selecting "Long Edge (Standard)" or "Short Edge (flip)" has no real effect - the printer still only prints on one side. I also set up two-sided printing as default via localhost:631 and tried printing a plan-text file via the "lp" command, but the result was the same (only one side used.) Note that I otherwise use the printer with a very old Mac, and with that setup, two-sided printing works just fine.
In the (XP 720) ppd file, I notice the following: *Duplex None/Off: "" *Duplex DuplexNoTumble/2-sided long edge: "" *Duplex DuplexTumble/DuplexTumble-sided short edge: "" Now, I'm no expert in the PPD format, but shouldn't the rihgt-hand-side of the ":" contain some sort of command to actually select the correct duplex setting on the printer?
Actually, near as I can tell the duplex options are handled by the custom epson filter. But I'm no expert. Looks like to deleted and re-added the printer to use the right model?
I've tried all sorts of restets and reinits, without any luck. Besides that, I don't think XP-720 is *really* the correct type. Like I said, the model name is Stylus Photo PX720WD, which is "supported", but without a duplex setting in the PPD. That makes no sense to me, as I'm quite sure the "D" in "PX720WD" is actually short for "Duplex".
I just found that Epson supplies two driver packages that are supposed to support this printer. One is epson-inkjet-printer-escpr, the other can be found here: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02/DriverDownloadInfo.do?LG2=EN&CN2=&DSCMI=16837&DSCCHK=87a9bd36844312158d109e0dfb663142374621a8 Both drivers are listed if you enter product pame "PX720WD" and select operating system "Linux" at http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/ I actually tried something like this before, too, but apparently I did it the wrong way, as I wasn't able to find anything good... Anyhow, if I use a PPD from this package, two-sided printing actually works! BTW, this PPD doesn't have any "commands" for Duplex, either, so I suppose the setting is indeed handled by the CUPS filter - which is a different one in this case. Maybe this 2nd package could be included in EPEL, too?
Looks like that may be one of the limitations of the "R" (reduced) software package. Unfortunately, the full featured driver is subject to a non-free software license: http://download.ebz.epson.net/la/linux/inkjet_for_linux.html#softlicense
