Created attachment 954023 [details]
dmesg from starting in multiuser mode

Description of problem:

The page at http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ claims nouveau has support for maxwell (GM107) these days, but if I try to boot the 64 bit Fedora 21 workstation live image, I get a black screen and the system beeping at me every few minutes as though it is having hardware problems. The nasty binary nvidia drivers from rpmfusion work fine.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Not certain - whatever version is built into the live image.

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Try to boot live image with default options
2.get black screen after X tries to start
3.hear beeps every so often and see flickering on USB stick light.

Actual results:
Black screen

Expected results:
Gnome login screen

Additional info:

I can boot with no graphics in multiuser target and I get text, but even then it looks like the kernel mode setting didn't succeed in changing the screen resolution, the character size looks like I'm just running the text mode provided by the video bios.

My monitor is a samsung UHD connected to the GTX 750Ti via display port and has native resolution 3840x2160.

I'll attach a dmesg dump I was able to get in multiuser mode. The system seems to flake out when I ran startx and got the beeping again, so I don't know any obvious way to get dmesg after X starts.

I notice an error in dmesg about not being able to load firmware, but I don't know if that is the problem or merely yet another expected cryptic message :-).

Comment 2 Tom Horsley 2014-11-07 14:35:30 UTC
After more reading, I found http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/NVC0_Firmware/
with the world's most cryptic "instructions" for extracting the firmware from the nvidia binary driver so nouveau can install it.

Anyone know of a web page with instructions for people who aren't nvidia driver developers?

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2015-11-04 14:55:42 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 21 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 21. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '21'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 21 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 4 Tom Horsley 2015-11-04 15:10:59 UTC
Apparently there is still no firmware available in fedora 23, I get the same black screen. I have to force nouveau not to load at all and force vesa video in order to get anything other than a black screen.

Comment 5 Tom Horsley 2016-06-28 22:50:56 UTC
Hey! This is fixed in fedora 24 out of the box. I guess I can close it now.
