Description bob mckay 2014-11-24 09:16:04 UTC
Description of problem:
Yum installs the kernel and corresponding kernel-devel, but somehow doesn't install kernel-devel properly (despite giving no errors). When compiling modules, the previous version of kernel-devel seems to be used (at least, the magic in the built module says it came from the previous version) even though 'yum list' shows the current version as installed (it bolds the current kernel and the previous kernel and kernel-devel, but _does not_ bold the current kernel-devel; I haven't been able to find any documentation of this bolding, so I don't know its significance).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
3.17.3 (I had the same problem with 3.16.3-200, which I documented at
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=300863; somehow something in a complex sequence of grub2-install, grub2-mkconfig and removals and reinstallations of the corresponding kernel and kernel-devel changed something, and I managed to get it working then. But now a few kernels later, it has recurred and I have no idea what fixed it last time, or how to fix it now).

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Revert kernel and kernel-devel to 3.17.2
2. yum update kernel*
3. Attempt to build kernel module

Actual results:
module is built with kernel-devel 3.17.2

Expected results:
module is built with kernel-devel 3.17.3

Additional info:
I'm deeply sorry, but this is a production server, and the module that I'm building is essential to its operation. So for the moment, I have had to revert to 3.17.2. Because it's a production server, it won't be easy to do some kinds of testing (in particular, anything that requires a reboot - for example, right now there are jobs running on the cluster that hangs off it that will complete in about ten days' time). I'm happy to dig out anything that won't require a reboot, but reboot requests may take a couple of weeks.

Apologies also if this is the wrong component to file against - without a deep understanding of how yum and the kernel interact, I haven't been able to figure out for sure where to file it.

Comment 1 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 13:22:49 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 23:35:43 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
