Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Bug 1167852

Summary: Predictable Network Interface Names should be disabled in rhel-guest-image when using SR-IOV

Fixed In Version: Doc Type: Bug Fix
Doc Text:
Prior to this update, starting a guest image in an environment that was using Simple Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) caused device names assigned to the guest's network interfaces to be different from the names in the default configuration file. As a consequence, the guest image could not acquire an IP address. This update disables the use of predictive interface naming when rhel-guest-image is used with SR-IOV, which prevents the problem from occurring.

Description Itzik Brown 2014-11-25 14:14:08 UTC
Description of problem:
When booting an instance with SR-IOV interface using rhel-guest-image the interface name doesn't match with the configuration file which causes the Instance to start without IP address.

For example the interface name is ens4 while the interface in the configuration file is eth0

When passing net.ifnames=0 on the kernel command line the interface name is eth0 and the problem is solved.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
rhel-guest-image-7.0-20140909.0
OSP6
How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start an instance with a Virtual Function attached
2. Use 'ip a' to list the interfaces' names
3.

Actual results:
Interface name is different from eth0

Expected results:
Interface name should be 'eth0'

Comment 3 yuliu 2015-01-08 09:19:08 UTC
Version: rhel-guest-image-7.0-20140930.0.x86_64.qcow2

When boot with SR-IOV interface attached, the DEVICE names are something like: ensx. After boot with net.ifnames=0 as above, problem solved.

Comment 5 yuliu 2015-01-19 05:59:45 UTC
Version: rhel-guest-image-7.1-20150116.0.x86_64.qcow2

Check network after booted with SR-IOV interface attached, the DEVICE names are eth0 type.

#cat /etc/grub2.cfg |grep net

...net.ifnames=0

It has net.ifnames=0 appended to kernel command line.

Verified as above.
