Description of problem: NIC hotplug/unplug is not supported without guest OS support. It make sense to document and warn the user. The only place where I see the feature documented is in section 9.7.2.5. Hot Plugging Network Interfaces in the Admin Guide.
Note: this one is specific for NIC hotplug, but it's probably worth cecking about disk hotplug as well.
this is an automated message. oVirt 3.6.0 RC3 has been released and GA is targeted to next week, Nov 4th 2015. Please review this bug and if not a blocker, please postpone to a later release. All bugs not postponed on GA release will be automatically re-targeted to - 3.6.1 if severity >= high - 4.0 if severity < high
Didn't we fix this via validation in latest 3.5?
(In reply to Yaniv Dary from comment #3) > Didn't we fix this via validation in latest 3.5? Bug 1283287 introduced checking whether *disk* hot(un)plug succeeded within 30 seconds. Bug 1134256 would add the same semantics to *vNIC*, and only in ovirt-3.6.2. Regardless, documenting the fact that hotplugging is impossible without guest support is important.
Assigning to Byron for review.
Hi Dan, In relation to comment 1. Can you please confirm that this is for NIC hot (un)plug only? I've followed the instructions in the Virtual Machine Management guide to hot (un)plug a virtual disk and it worked fine without a guest OS installed. https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.6/html-single/Virtual_Machine_Management_Guide/index.html#Hot_plugging_virtual_machine_disks_and_network_interfaces Thanks in advance.
I'm pretty sure that this is true for both nic and disk. Which version of vdsm have you tested? A hotplug attempt is should fail after about 30 seconds. I'd like to see vdsm.log of plug-wait-unplug of both nic an disk if it does not.
Seems I originally tested this on an older vdsm version. Both fails on the newer version.
