Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Tim Mooney 2014-12-02 21:43:30 UTC
Description of problem:

There's an undocumented incompatibility between anaconda with RHEL 6.5 and RHEL 6.6. With RHEL 6.5 and earlier, if you use "%packages --nobase" but call "authconfig" in your kickstart file, authconfig is automatically included in the install and your authconfig parameters are executed at kickstart time.

With RHEL 6.6, anaconda is no longer automatically requiring authconfig when "%packages --nobase" is specified, so now the authconfig *silently* fails.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Always when kickstarting with "%packages --nobase"

Steps to Reproduce:
kickstart a system at RHEL 6.6 with "%packages --nobase" and "authconfig" with some set of authentication options as part of the kickstart file.

Actual results:

authconfig is not installed and is not run, so none of the customizations to /etc/pam.d/ files are done.

Expected results:

When "authconfig" is included in the list of kickstart options, it should be automatically required as part of the install, even if "%packages --nobase" is specified. This is the way RHEL 6.0 through 6.5 worked.

Tim,

Did you already open a Red Hat Support case for this also? That will be your fastest resolution rather than opening a bugzilla directly.

I think this sounds like a duplicate of bz1161682 which is already in motion. It is documented here with a workaround for you to test:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1361093

Could you please test that workaround and verify that it resolves your issue?

Thanks for your comments Terry, they're appreciated.

I can't open a support case; as a university, we get a deal on licenses but not support, so we're a customer that doesn't have access to open support cases.

I've reviewed the solution # you provided. We had already separately begun using the workaround suggested there, and we'll continue to do so going forward.

I'm certain you had nothing to do with the ridiculous text in the "root cause" section, but I feel required to point out how laughable the excuse offered there is.

I understand that Red Hat has no plans to revert the change. That's fine, but there should at least be notes in the actual kickstart documentation, indicating that a minimal install no longer auto-requires certain packages, so they must be specified individually. Ideally, that "Note" should be by each keyword for which this is true, so that "authconfig" has a note below it indicating that you must add the "authconfig" package to the @packages list when doing a minimal installation. Similar for any other packages that aren't auto-required.

Thanks again for your comments and the pointer to the Access article.

I'm duping this to bug 1161682 since both issues stem from the same patch. Please feel free to add yourself as Cc and/or follow up there.
