I believe this was a hardware problem. I also had segfaults in glibc and several other programs. The hardware was circa 2006 and I think it was getting flaky. 

I purchased a new computer and have been able to open the same files that previously were causing the faults.

This bug can be closed.

Thanks Karl. This crash is not in vmtoolsd but in glibc function elf_machine_rela. It is either glibc or some other lower level issue.
