I believe this was a hardware problem. I also had segfaults in glibc and several other programs. The hardware was circa 2006 and I think it was getting flaky. I purchased a new computer and have been able to open the same files that previously were causing the faults. This bug can be closed.

(In reply to Karl Kowallis from comment #12) Thanks Karl. This crash is not in vmtoolsd but in glibc function elf_machine_rela. It is either glibc or some other lower level issue.
