RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

But UEFI mode can select up to 1024x768.

Expected results:
In UEFI mode, the customer can select higher resolution as BIOS mode.

I'm sorry for my miswriting. Xorg.conf is wrong. Xorg.0.log is correct.
And the customer reported that following things also.

In BIOS mode, the system can retrieve monitor information.

Comment 5 Adam Jackson 2015-02-18 18:18:30 UTC
This appears to be be because the native I2C routines for this chip don't actually work. In BIOS mode we can fall back to asking VBE for it, but there's no such thing in UEFI.

On this hardware, does RHEL 7.1 in UEFI mode behave as expected? It will use a different userspace driver since the mga support is in-kernel in rhel7, I'm just wondering if resolution detection works.

Comment 6 Keigo Noha 2015-02-19 06:42:46 UTC
Hi Adam,

Thank you for your response.
The customer tried to use the machine with RHEL7. In RHEL7, the behaviour is expected.
Following result is taken in RHEL7.0

rhel6 has xorg-x11-drv-modesetting.
Why doesn't a kernel of rhel6 support mgag200 drm driver?

Comment 8 Keigo Noha 2015-04-06 01:18:40 UTC
Hi Haruo,

Thank you for your comment. I don't have an answer to your question.

To Adam,
Could you answer Haruo's question, Comment#7?

Comment 9 Dave Airlie 2015-05-21 03:10:13 UTC
we only enabled mgag200 kernel driver in RHEL7 because RHEL6 had support for it in the userspace module, and backporting it was considered too large a change for RHEL6 midlife.

Comment 10 Dave Airlie 2015-05-21 03:21:54 UTC
we have a patch for this in a bug from Matrox, however its not the cleanest code but it should work, I'm just not sure it'll make RHEL6.7 final without a good customer case.

I can't think large change is necessary to RHEL6 for that backport mgag200 kernel drm driver for RHEL6. The patch is very simple.

Patch for RHEL6.7 beta snap1 (kernel-2.6.32-558.el6).

Comment 14 Haruo Tomita 2015-05-26 04:49:19 UTC
When patch is used, modesetting driver on mga g200e pilot is working fine.

To Adam,

Is mga driver supporting UEFI?

Please tell me the meaning of RHEL6 midlife.

I checked a life cycle of RHEL. RHEL6 GA was released on 2010-11-09.
Therefore, the life cycle of RHEL6 is now Production 1 Phase(~ 5 ½ years).
i.e., Native hardware enablement is provided by backporting hardware drivers, etc., to the relevant version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Hardware enablement that does not require substantial software changes may be provided independent from minor releases at Red Hat's discretion.

mgag200 driver it can be implemented as kmod driver.
So, there is no change in RHEL6.

Hi Adam,

Haruo created the patch candidate for this issue which is attached on this case.
Could you proceed the review of the patch?

Keigo

Hi Adam,

Keigo said.
When Linux kernel does a UEFI boot, xorg-x11-drv is supporting KMS.
xorg-x11-drv is Not supporting KMS in Fedora where RHEL is an up stream.

http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/xorg-x11-drv-mga.git/log/

patch of KMS doesn't commit to cgit.freedesktop.

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-mga/log/

Is Keigo right?

In RHEL 6 Matrox video is supported with a UMS driver, xorg-x11-drv-mga. The bug here is that the UMS driver is relying on some boot-time setup that happens in BIOS mode, but not in UEFI. The KMS driver we use in RHEL7 for this hardware used to have the same issue, but has been fixed. This bug concerns bringing that fix back to RHEL6.

xorg-x11-drv-mga in RHEL 6 Does RedHat support UEFI mode?
xorg-x11-drv-mga uses the INT10.
When booting using UEFI, do xorg-x11-drv-mga will work correctly?

Thanks.
However, not work correctly is UEFI mode.

Hi Adam,

The customer, Haruo, mentions on support case that the issue also has the problem wich EDID and monitor name could not be retrieved from the monitor.
I think the issue related to EDID and monitor name relates to this lower resolution issue.
Is my recognition correct?

Keigo

Turns out 1366x768 patch does not apply this kmod driver.

Hi dave,

I used use-ddc_randr12_2.patch. This patch seems to work fine for ServerEngine g200e pilot. There is a report in following bugzilla.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1196714

Comment 29 Keigo Noha 2015-09-04 09:54:29 UTC
Hi Adam,

Haruo tried a proposed patch from Matrox in BZ#1196714 and the patch resolve the issue in this BZ.
If we choose to merge the proposed patch in RHEL6, we don't need to consider the backport of KMS driver from RHEL7.

Could you review the Matrox's patch and accelerate to merge the patch?

Keigo
