Description schaefi 2015-02-16 12:24:08 UTC
Hi,

I seem to have the bug in Fedora 21.

Bug desciption:
Going over the settings menue
-> Settings
-> Printer
(-> unlock to use the options)
-> Options
-> Page Setup
-> Change "Legal" to "A4". Then the value immediately switches back to "Legal". I am unable to fix the value to "A4"
-> Printing the test page shows a legal page

Installing system-config-printer gives a slightly different error:
-> system-config-printer
(-> unlock to set options)
-> select OfficeJet-6700
-> Printer Options
-> Change "Legal" to "A4". Then the value remains on A4
-> Accept with "ok"
-> Printing the test page shows a legal page

Background information:

uname -a
Linux hoelderlin 3.17.4-301.fc21.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 27 19:09:10 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lpoptions -p Officejet-6700 -l | grep PageSize
PageSize/Media Size: Card3x5 Card4x6 L L.FB Photo4x6 Photo4x6.FB A6 A6.FB Hagaki Hagaki.FB Photo3x5 Photo5x7 Photo13x18 Photo5x7.FB Photo13x18.FB Card5x8 A5 A5.FB Ofuku Photo2L.FB 6x8 JB5 B5.FB Executive Statement *Letter Letter.FB CardLetter A4 A4.FB CardA4 Legal Photo10x15 Photo10x15.FB Photo2L Photo8x10 8x10.FB 8.5x13 EnvA2 EnvC6 EnvChou4 EnvCard EnvMonarch EnvDL Env10 EnvChou3 EnvC5 A4.Duplex Letter.Duplex CardA4.Duplex CardLetter.Duplex Custom.WIDTHxHEIGHT

Additional Information:

Changing the default paper size from legal to A4 seems to be possible:
1. using lpoptions:
lpoptions -p Officejet-6700 -o media=A4.FB

lpoptions -p Officejet-6700 -l | grep PageSize
PageSize/Media Size: Card3x5 Card4x6 L L.FB Photo4x6 Photo4x6.FB A6 A6.FB Hagaki Hagaki.FB Photo3x5 Photo5x7 Photo13x18 Photo5x7.FB Photo13x18.FB Card5x8 A5 A5.FB Ofuku Photo2L.FB 6x8 JB5 B5.FB Executive Statement Letter Letter.FB CardLetter A4 *A4.FB CardA4 Legal Photo10x15 Photo10x15.FB Photo2L Photo8x10 8x10.FB 8.5x13 EnvA2 EnvC6 EnvChou4 EnvCard EnvMonarch EnvDL Env10 EnvChou3 EnvC5 A4.Duplex Letter.Duplex CardA4.Duplex CardLetter.Duplex Custom.WIDTHxHEIGHT

2. using the local cups interface:
http://localhost:631/
-> Adding Printers and Classes
-> Manage Printers
-> select: OfficeJet-6700
-> Set Default Options
-> select: A4 Broderless

After doing this I can also change the default paper size using the standard settings menu of Fedora
-> Settings
-> Printer
(-> unlock to use the options)
-> Options
-> Page Setup
-> Change "Legal" to "A4" or any other value

But printing the test page gives the same result for A4 and for legal.

Workaround:

Here you get a workaround for the problem.
Install hplip-gui which then appears in the Fedora menu as "HP Device Manager".
-> Start the HP Device Manager
-> Device
-> Setup New Device
-> Connection: Network
-> Select: OfficeJet 6700 (or whatever printer you have)
-> Print Settings
-> General
-> Select: 4A Boderless
-> Printer Control
-> Set as default printer
-> Actions
-> Print Test Page

The A4 Borderless test page is printed perfectly (and tests with other pdf-files work perfectly too).

Verify the settings in the local cups interface: http://localhost:631
Check under (Administration -> Manage Printers) which printers and faxes are available now. Most probable your printer appears now two times:
- Printer that you have defined with the cups interface (and in my case using: HP OfficeJet 6700 hpijs, 3.14.10)
- Printer that you have defined with the HP Device Manager (and in my case using: HP Officejet 6700, hpcups 3.14.10)

I deleted the printer using hpijs because it is prints with the wrong paper size (this is the bug that I mentioned above).

I am using the printer with hpcups. But beware that the paper size of the printer using hpcups can only be changed in the "HP Device Manager" and not in the Fedora Standard Settings ("Settings -> Printers -> ..."). In the Fedora Standard Settings the paper size immediately changes back to initial value if changed (see bug description above).

I hope that helps for the users to continue. I also hope that this gives some hints how to solve the problem. Please let me know if the workaround worked for you too.

(this bug as been first reported in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=743882 but the bug seems to be different. Therefore a new bug is filed)

Hi schaefi,

could you put here what does your ~/.cups/lpoptions has set for 'media' or 'PageSize' if anything? Does your /etc/cups/printers.conf has a row like 'Option PageSize ...' or 'Option media ...'? What is set in your /etc/cups/ppd/your-printer.ppd for 'DefaultPageSize'?

Hi Marek,

~/.cups/lpoptions is:
Default Officejet_6700 PageSize=A4.FB

/etc/cups/printers.conf is:
# Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.7.5
# Written by cupsd on 2015-02-27 08:13
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE WHEN CUPSD IS RUNNING

/etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_6700.ppd is:

*DefaultPageSize: A4
...

I hope that helps. If you need further infos, please let me know.

Comment 4 Marek Kašík 2015-03-17 14:37:06 UTC
The problem here is that you have set the PageSize locally. When you change PageSize in Printers panel, the CUPS is asked to change default value to the value you've selected. It updates the value of the combo after that but since you have set the PageSize locally, it is set to that value (it has higher priority). Once you remove the setting of the option PageSize in the lpoption file it should work fine.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2015-11-04 13:08:26 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 21 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 21. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '21'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 21 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-12-02 09:06:40 UTC
Fedora 21 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-12-01. Fedora 21 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
