Description Ralf Corsepius 2015-03-03 06:39:48 UTC
Description of problem:
libxfcegui fails to build from source w/ xfce-4.12.x

..
../libxfcegui4/.libs/libxfcegui4.so: undefined reference to `xfce_setenv'
..

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
libxfcegui4-4.10.0-7

A quick work-around would be this patch from
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10974#c6

However, I am not sure if continuing to support libxfcegui4 is a good idea.
cf. https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10974#c7

Anyway, as it won't be possible to drop packages, which depend on libxfcegui4 from released Fedoras, a potential upgrade to xfce-4.12.x on fc21 (and may-be fc22) will very likely need this patch.

I am proposing this patch (against git/master)

I am going to use me provenpackager privileges to apply this patch, because today's "rawhide report" reports a larger number of broken deps, which I assume to be caused by this FTBFS:

[xfbib]
	xfbib-0.0.2-13.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-cellmodem-plugin]
	xfce4-cellmodem-plugin-0.0.5-14.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-modemlights-plugin]
	xfce4-modemlights-plugin-0.1.3.99-17.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-notes-plugin]
	xfce4-notes-plugin-1.7.7-11.fc23.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-quicklauncher-plugin]
	xfce4-quicklauncher-plugin-1.9.4-18.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-radio-plugin]
	xfce4-radio-plugin-0.5.1-9.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-smartbookmark-plugin]
	xfce4-smartbookmark-plugin-0.4.4-9.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-timer-plugin]
	xfce4-timer-plugin-0.6.1-16.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-wmdock-plugin]
	xfce4-wmdock-plugin-0.3.4-10.fc22.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6
[xfce4-xfswitch-plugin]
	xfce4-xfswitch-plugin-0.0.1-11.fc21.i686 requires libxfce4util.so.6

We can revisit the question of "whether to retire libxfcegui4" or not later.

This was actually somewhat intentional. libxfcegui4 is the old interface that was depreciated when Xfce 4.8 came out. They somewhat reluctantly provided a 4.10 version for those plugins not off it.

I'm just waiting to hear from Christoph (the owner of those plugins) that it's ok to retire them and remove them from the distro.

In any case, fixing this can let them limp on a few more days, but I really think we should retire all those things using this.

I don't have a strong opinion on this question, except that if you are serious about upgrading fc21 to xfce-4.12.x, you must provide these plugins and a hacked up libfcegui4 for fc21.

FWIW: The origin of me hitting this bug, was me experimenting with upgrading to xfce-4.12.x locally (I am now on fc21+xfce-4.12 on 2 experimental machines).

Yeah, for f21 we would indeed need it. ;(

Comment 7 Ralf Corsepius 2015-03-03 15:28:19 UTC
Another problem will be apps, which are using libxfcegui4.

AFAICT so far, there is at least one:

xfbib - Upstream seems to be dead, but gentoo seems to have a patch to port it to libxfce4ui.
