Description of problem:

Within the last 24 hours or so, `yum check-update` (and yum-cron) started reporting broken update notices.

How reproducible:

Every time I run `yum check-update` or yum-cron runs, which sends me an annoying email every hour.

I'm running RHEL 7 on AWS EC2.  The problem began with a mostly up-to-date RHEL 7.0 server.  I upgraded to RHEL 7.1 an hour ago, and the problem persists.

Same here. Seems to be a conflict of sorts with the optional repo. If I disable either the main repo or the optional repo, the problem goes away:

Disregard above it was due to subscription management issue that was resolved.

# subscription-manager unsubscribe --all
# subscription-manager clean 

# yum clean all

Then resubscribe and then run `yum update`  again...

We just started encountering this bug this week: 2016-05-25.

Red Hat Support asked we have patience while waiting on a fix from Engineering.

This sporadically recurring bug seems completely unacceptable to me.

We're running RHEL 7.2 on a Dell built system.

We started seeing these errors again on 2016-05-24. I can confirm what trond stated in comment #4 - disabling one of rhel-7-server-rpms and rhel-7-server-optional-rpms makes the error message go away.

I confirm that disabling rhel-7-server-optional-rpms eliminates the error for us. Problem is, we have items from the optional software to keep up to date.

What info is required to resolve this "NEEDINFO" state?

Are there specific log files, files from /var/cache/yum, configuration files, etc that I can provide to help resolve this issue?

It's occurring just about every month now, and getting hourly complaints from my servers about this is starting to get irksome...

Hi everyone.  This should be resolved again.  I have forced an update of the rhel-7-server-optional-rpms repo so the metadata is back in sync with the rhel-7-server-rpms.

The permanent fix is slated to go out later this month.  In the meantime, if anyone does hit this again first try a yum clean all.  If that doesn't resolve it, run yum repolist and attach the list of repos.

I'm seeing the problem on the workstation side, and the various prior error clearing tricks don't work.

It is working for me now as well.
I ran 'yum check-update' and saw no more error messages. Wasn't sure if there was lingering confusion so I ran a 'yum clean all' anyway. Still works - until next time.

As of about 2 AM today, the following Red Hat repositories are producing the errors described here, on our RHEL 7 machines:

rhel-7-workstation-optional-rpms
rhel-7-workstation-rpms
rhel-7-server-optional-rpms
rhel-7-server-rpms

This happens only from the hourly cron job.  Running '/etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron' by hand triggers the errors.  A plain 'yum update' by hand on any of the affected machines does not produce the errors.

A run of 'yum clean all' on all of our RHEL 7 machines did not clear the errors.  I would much prefer not having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the repositories on all our systems.  Is there any way for Red Hat to fix this on their end?

After over 24 hours of hourly spam from our RHEL 7 systems, i tried unusbscribing and resubscribing on one of the affected machines, with just as much luck as I had last time (see Comment 84).

Why does this keep happening?

Also, there is a NeedInfo flag set.  What information is needed?  The NeedInfo flag got added with no commentary.

Workaround on Satellite 6.2.11:

It looks like I had the problem because of incremental updates on contentviews.
Once I've synced all repositories, published new version of each contentview and composite contentview the update/errata install works again.

Hello Jan,

this is a complex issue which was caused most likely by errata tool. The only way how to fix this.

Is to stage fixed updateinfo records (create dump of xmls) fix the issue in files itself and push it to pulp/cdn and rhn again.

I'm not sure whether we can easily remove records which can't be updated.

We have just hit this issues as well. Did anyone have any success by deleting and resyncing the repo from Satellite 5.8? Our Satellite 6 environment seems to be fine now after doing this: 

Navigate to Satellite WebUI -> Administer -> Settings -> Katello and set 'force post sync actions' to 'true'. After that navigate to Content -> Sync Status and synchronize the repositories available to client machine and ensure the same repositories are successfully synchronized.

Hello 

I did re-push all of referenced advisories referenced in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1203963#c139 in order to update push count and release date. These seemed to be problems in the past.

If the re-push doesn't work, then I'll get in touch with ERRATA and DELIVERY teams since it would mean that either

* errata tool generates incorrect update-info
* pulp can't properly propagate data from json to repodata.


I'd like to ask you to re-test sync tomorrow (July 11th 2018) to see if issue from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1203963#c139 was resolved. Any new issues found after these would be then reported as a new request.

Hey mate,

We're a customer that was experiencing this problem. We had an issue with taskomatic that was also resolved over the last two days as well. So I'm not sure if it was that change or your fine work. But this doesn't appear to be an issue for us any more. Our customers are able to get updates from RHEL7 repos again now from Satellite 5.8 infrastructure.

This is occurring again...

Is there any workaround to at least squelch these messages from yum-cron?

It looks like these are just being written to stdout/stderr by the underlying yum commands that invokes, so just disabling the yum-cron email doesn't seem to be sufficient; it still generates emails to the root account (which, in our environment, gets forwarded to a central mailbox).

I can confirm that this message has started occurring again. In this instance, this is due to an ongoing effort to regenerated/republish repository metadata after a Pulp update. Unfortunately, this is resulting in errata that are split across release channels temporarily mismatching.

From the example above dated 2019-03-25 18:24:40 UTC, the RHSA-2016:0071 errata is within the rhel-7-server-rpms and rhel-7-server-optiona-rpms channels. If we look at the end of the summary section, the rhel-7-server-rpms channel is generated with the new Pulp revision, and the rhel-7-server-optional-rpms channel has not yet been regenerated/republished yet. The difference is discernible as the end of the content string has an additional "\n" newline in the newer version, and the old version has stripped that newline off.

It seems like the problem occurs when Red Hat issues a single Erratum that is included in multiple repositories. e.g. rhel and rhel-optional. The following workflow seems to cause a problem for the user:

1. Sync rhel
2. Sync rhel-optional
3. Red Hat updates the Erratum
4. Sync rhel, but not rhel-optional
5. Run yum check-update on a client that is using both repos

Because the same Erratum in rhel and rhel-optional are not actually the same anymore, the client is confused. I don't think Pulp is able to fix this problem. The user has to be aware that certain repos should be synced together and not just by themselves. RHUI could probably be configured to do that. Satellite users need docs.

for support guided me to this ticket because of Case #02479331 . at least for my issue this is not a synchronization issue but support does not seem to get that: there is an actual problem in the rhel repositories presented by cdn:

Dennis,

It doesn't look like this issue has occurred due to misuse of Satellite or RHUI when syncing repos. Looking back at the history I'm seeing it as having occurred when a given erratum's metadata differs between repositories on the CDN itself either due to race conditions or minor differences introduced by content publication tools. When it's due to race conditions the issue should resolve itself. When tools have introduced subtle differences in the errata metadata between repos we've had to republish errata to get the repo metadata back in sync. Often when customers are performing "yum clean all" and clearing their local caches they are still seeing this issue on update. That seems to indicate their issue is on the CDN itself. In these cases the work around is to disable one of the differing repositories (e.g. disable the debug or optional repo), but the real fix is for Red Hat to republish the content to get the repos back in sync.

It's worth noting that this is not a single bug that has remained unfixed for years. It is a series of issues that put out similar error messages and therefore lead customers and support engineers back to this bugzilla. Comment 178 shows a current example of these CDN differences that may require the erratum to be republished.

Knowledge Base (Solution) 1502743 was updated and now includes the current issue:

"There is an ongoing issue related to the generation of errata notification XML content available on the Red Hat Content Delivery Network (CDN) specifically related to the RHSA-2017:2423 update notice. Systems will emit this error when both the rhel-7-server-rpms and rhel-7-server-optional-rpms channels are visible. 
...
The error is currently being addressed and can be safely ignored."

As of this morning, it is down to merely:

I find it hard to believe I am the only one seeing these errors. I also find it hard to believe that there's no way to test for these errors before deploying a broken repository. Can we get this fixed in such a way that it never recurs? Say, by smacking the offending person's knuckles with a ruler every time it happens?

If it is any consolation, you are not alone.  We are all in this together.  ;)

I run yum-cron on 28 systems, and see a flood of messages when this happens each time.

It is just tiring to repeatedly report this message each time.  Maybe customers don't use yum-cron?  Or perhaps they turn off these errors some how?  It seems like an issue we'd want to solve well for customers to help show value for RHEL.

I've gotten to the point where I only bother to report after 24 hours.  The shorter runs, the ones that only last for a few hours -- across my 134 currently powered on systems -- I just delete and keep going.

I'm surprised there's no sysadmin, in a position to do something about it, at Red Hat who gets buried in these messages when they happen.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 shipped it's final minor release on September 29th, 2020. 7.9 was the last minor releases scheduled for RHEL 7.
From intial triage it does not appear the remaining Bugzillas meet the inclusion criteria for Maintenance Phase 2 and will now be closed.

This bug should not have been closed.  It is not an bug related to any specific minor version of Red Hat, as evidenced by it being a continuing problem from the opening of this case in RHEL 7.1, to the current error I'm seeing in RHEL 7.9.

The bug is related to Red Hat uploading broken repositories to the production servers.

Yesterday, I started seeing the usual drumbeat of "there's another broken repo!" emails:

If you need at this point in the rhel7 life cycle this issue fixed, can you please open a 
case with the Red Hat support?
rhel7 is not receiving many updates any more, fixes have to meet z-stream criteria.
Of course, the updating functionality/repository handling is very important.  If this is
imposing serious problems, opening a case will be the right way to voice that.
It will lead to for example workarounds being considered for you - or code changes if
the issue is serious enough to warrant that (and fitting z-stream criteria).

If the issue exists in rhel8, then it should be reopened for "product: rhel8".
Simply reopening this one here for rhel7 would not lead to anything, I think.
