Description Ken Dreyer (Red Hat) 2015-05-01 01:19:14 UTC
Travis and Vasu discussed this on IRC today and I want to capture it in a BZ so we track it for 1.3.

Description of problem:
The MON and OSD binaries are split into "ceph-mon" and "ceph-osd" sub-packages, but ceph-deploy does not know how to install just one of these. Its current behavior is to install all the server-related packages on every node.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
ceph-deploy-1.5.23-1.el7cp

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set up a dedicated system to be a monitor node or an OSD node (not both).
2. Enable the ceph-mon or ceph-osd Puddle repository on a host (but don't enable both repos)
3. Use ceph-deploy to install ceph on the node

Actual results:
ceph-deploy tries to install the ceph, ceph-mon, and ceph-osd packages

Expected results:
ceph-deploy should only install the packages that are relevant to each node's role.

Thanks Ken for the BZ

Comment 2 Ken Dreyer (Red Hat) 2015-05-04 18:07:47 UTC
Discussed this during ICE standup. Travis mentioned that Alfredo's going to be handling ceph-deploy for this release; re-assigning to him.

Comment 3 Alfredo Deza 2015-05-06 14:06:25 UTC
Is the split RHEL-specific? Or is this for all distros/upstream? And from what versions should we account this change?

The complexity of the solution depends on the answers to the questions above.

The split is just RHEL specific, and it's only downstream in the RHCS product.

The split is in RHCS 1.2.3 and 1.3.0 (which roughly corresponds to Ceph 0.80.8 and Ceph 0.94.1).

The upstream ticket for splitting out all packages (RPMs and DEBs) is http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/10587 , but I have not been able to get something completed and tested there yet.

Comment 5 Federico Lucifredi 2015-05-07 00:32:30 UTC
this is the priority 1 bug for Ceph-deploy in 1.3.0, per today's discussion.

Comment 6 Ken Dreyer (Red Hat) 2015-05-07 02:02:32 UTC
Setting Rebase keyword, since this is likely to require a rebase to a newer upstream version than 1.5.23.

Comment 7 Alfredo Deza 2015-05-12 14:26:23 UTC
Pull request opened and ready for review: https://github.com/ceph/ceph-deploy/pull/285

Comment 8 Alfredo Deza 2015-05-14 12:53:13 UTC
merged commit 6532141 into ceph:master

Comment 12 Vasu Kulkarni 2015-06-01 21:03:12 UTC
1.5.25 is aware of package split, verified.
