Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Doc Text:
With this update, the static uidgid pair 167:167 has been reserved for user ceph. The Ceph file system is a distributed object storage file system that can have nodes on several machines. For consistency purposes, it requires the same user ID on all machines in the cluster. The ceph packages can now use this static ID pair and have a consistent static ID across all systems in the cluster.

Description Ondrej Vasik 2015-05-13 08:13:36 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1220846 +++

Please assign a static UID/GID for ceph (this was approved by the FPC at https://fedorahosted.org/fpc/ticket/524). The user and group names can simply be "ceph".

It would be ideal if we could have the same numeric UID on RHEL 5/6/7 as on Fedora.

--- Additional comment from Ondrej Vasik on 2015-05-12 11:44:10 EDT ---

Thanks for the ticket and bz.
RHEL 5 is not possible, I can't make static reservation above 100 there and there are no free slots under 100. Should be safe to use static ID from RHEL6/7 there, though.

Any prefered homedir? (can be just / or /var/ceph ...)
What package will "own" that user creation?
I'll set /sbin/nologin as user shell, if there are no objections.

Once the information is provided, I'll assign some id to ceph in next Rawhide setup build.

Thanks Ondřej, it's fine to skip RHEL 5. RHEL 6 and 7 will be great.

Preferred homedir: /var/lib/ceph
Package that will "own" the UID: "ceph"
No objections to /sbin/nologin.

(In reply to Ken Dreyer (Red Hat) from comment #2)
> Package that will "own" the UID: "ceph"

Sage pointed out to me that the actual binary RPM is "ceph-common" (which comes from the "ceph" SRPM). Not sure what you want to put into https://git.fedorahosted.org/cgit/setup.git/tree/uidgid for that.

--- Additional comment from Ondrej Vasik on 2015-05-13 03:56:24 EDT ---

ceph	167	167	/var/lib/ceph /sbin/nologin	ceph-common

Entry added to https://git.fedorahosted.org/cgit/setup.git/tree/uidgid and built in Rawhide.
I'm going to clone this into RHEL 6/7 - but feel free to start with using it there even if the bz is not yet resolved (it is just documentation and I expect to get this fixed in next minor RHEL update through fastrack). Built as setup-2.9.8-1.fc23 - closing Rawhide.
