Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Oliver Ilian 2015-05-21 16:51:16 UTC
Description of problem:
Would it be possible to add the Description and Location info from a cups server to the 'Print dialog' in Gnome 3

Right now there is "Printer" "Location" "Status". Would be great to have "Printer" "Description" "Location" "Status".

Location shows right now the hostname of the cups server. In RHEL 6, this was the Location given for the cups Printer Queue.

For example:

Queue Name	Description	Location
HP4650DN	Color printer	Help Desk MUC

would show in the 'print dialoge' as:

Queue Name	Location
HP4650DN	$HOSTNAME-of-cups-server

Comment 2 Marek Kašík 2015-05-28 12:33:59 UTC
The location field should already show what you want. Could you paste a screenshot here?

The description is something which can be quite long for such a dialog so I don't agree with adding it. We have already the name and location there which should be enough to locate the correct printer. Ask your administrator to change the name or location to be more specific if it is not the case.

Comment 5 Oliver Ilian 2015-06-08 12:05:33 UTC
I have added 2 views for my printers. Not all have a spoken Name, but the Location shows 2 different things:
- Hostname in Print Dialogue
- My added description in Cups_view

I agree that the Location can be long, but what about making the column a default size, and if it is longer, it will add "..." at the end to imply that it is longer. And make all the columns resizeable by the user (is is not right now)

Comment 6 Marek Kašík 2015-06-15 15:36:38 UTC
How have you added those printers? Have you added them using cups-browsed?

Comment 7 Matthias Clasen 2015-07-16 17:31:48 UTC
This needs to be fixed upstream first.

Comment 9 Oliver Ilian 2015-08-06 08:49:08 UTC
Yes, the Printers are added by cups-browsed

> Yes, the Printers are added by cups-browsed

Then this is a bug in cups-browsed which is part of cups-filters package. It uses hostname as location.
