RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Jim Campbell 2015-06-10 12:01:12 UTC
Description of problem:

User is having difficulty in getting the auto-logout instructions to work. They are attempting to follow the instructions from here:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Desktop_Migration_and_Administration_Guide/user-sessions.html

A description of their attempts is found on the Scientific Linux User mailing list:

http://listserv.fnal.gov/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind1506&L=scientific-linux-users&T=0&P=6815

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

7.1

How reproducible:

The instructions appear to work for shorter timeouts, but the user thinks that the screensaver kicking-in may disrupt longer timout settings. I don't think that this affects me on Fedora 22 (I tried a 15 minute log-out setting, and my screensaver kicked-in during that timeframe), but it may be different between EL7 and current Fedora. Also, the current docs from git include slightly different instructions at the start of the help steps.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Follow instructions as noted in EL7 documentation, but set timeout for 3 hours (I will verify the exact duration with the person who is having the issue).
2. Allow computer to idle for that length of time.
3. See if system automatically logs out.

Actual results:

System logs out for shorter durations, but not when the setting is set to longer durations (i.e., several hours).

Expected results:

System should log out at appropriate time, whether the setting is set to a short duration or a longer duration.

Additional info:

Should also test to see whether docs in git master can be applied to current EL7 documentation.

Thanks for your bug report, Jim. Moving this to the desktop guide component, and assigning to Jana.

more likely to be a bug than a documentation problem

Comment 5 Bastien Nocera 2016-04-07 12:01:15 UTC
There were a number of bugs in the way that we wake the screen up when notifications come in, including the fact that waking up the screen when a critical notification comes in would reset the idle counter, meaning that it was impossible to actually sleep.

The most obvious bug was fixed in:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726056

Which is fixed in GNOME 3.12. As we ship something newer in RHEL 7.2, I believe that the problem is already fixed.

Can you please verify this?
