Description Dave Cross 2015-06-14 08:46:39 UTC
Description of problem:

I have a Dell Dimension XPS 8700 running Fedora 22 (recently updated from 21 using fedup).

Several times a day, X freezes and I have to reboot the system. This was an occasional problem on Fedora 21 (once or twice a week) but now it happens six or eight times a day.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Fedora 22.
kernel-4.0.4-303.fc22.x86_64

How reproducible:

Happens (eventually) every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start system
2. Use system
3. Wait...

Actual results:

X will freeze

Expected results:

X not freezing.

Additional info:

I know this is a terrible bug report. I'm not sure what information will be useful to you, but let me know what you need and I'll post updates here.

Comment 1 Dave Cross 2015-06-14 15:43:29 UTC
Reading https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Xorg_problems - here are some more details.

This is a "type 3" lock-up, i.e. the mouse cursor does not move.

I've attached a couple of (hopefully) useful logs. I'll work on getting a dmesg log soon.

There's no xorg.conf.

I have a single monitor connected to the graphic card using DVI.

Let me know if you need any more.

*********** MASS BUG UPDATE **************

We apologize for the inconvenience. There is a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 22 kernel bugs.

Fedora 22 has now been rebased to 4.2.3-200.fc22. Please test this kernel update (or newer) and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel.

If you have moved on to Fedora 23, and are still experiencing this issue, please change the version to Fedora 23.

If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.

*********** MASS BUG UPDATE **************
This bug is being closed with INSUFFICIENT_DATA as there has not been a response in over 4 weeks. If you are still experiencing this issue, please reopen and attach the relevant data from the latest kernel you are running and any data that might have been requested previously.

Comment 8 Dave Cross 2015-11-24 13:16:07 UTC
This problem almost completely went away under Fedora 22 (freezes twice a week rather than twice an hour). And when I upgraded to Fedora 23, it was fine too.

But over the last weekend (21-22 Nov) the problem has come back. I'm lucky to get 20 minutes of use out of the system before it freezes.

Comment 12 Dave Cross 2015-11-25 10:17:40 UTC
Added new versions of the three log files from before. I figured that as I'm now using Fedora 23, many things could have changed.

Please let me know if any more information would be useful.

Comment 13 Dave Cross 2015-11-30 09:12:04 UTC
Over the weekend, I discovered that the problem goes away if I use

kernel-4.2.5-300.fc23.x86_64

But I get the problem when I use either of

kernel-core-4.2.6-300.fc23.x86_64
kernel-core-4.2.6-301.fc23.x86_64

So perhaps a regression introduced in 4.2.6.

Let me know if I can give you any more useful information.

Comment 14 Josh Boyer 2016-05-26 19:31:51 UTC
Are you still having problems with the 4.5.5 kernel?

Comment 15 Dave Cross 2016-05-26 20:47:54 UTC
I haven't seen kernel 4.5.5 yet.

The if I boot into the most recent kernel (4.4.9) then I get freezes every hour or so. When I go back to 4.4.8 I can usually go for a couple of days without a freeze.

Comment 16 Fedora End Of Life 2016-11-24 11:53:31 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 17 Fedora End Of Life 2016-12-20 13:46:14 UTC
Fedora 23 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-12-20. Fedora 23 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
