Red Hat Satellite engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on Satellite to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs will be migrated starting at the end of May. If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/SAT-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Chongrui Zhang 2015-06-29 18:59:51 UTC
Description of problem:
Using several clients to register and attach (occurs with activation keys as well) to Satellite 6.1 for up to 5000 times to measure performance of system registrations. Anything more than 200 systems registered will cause wsgi:pulp to prevent future registrations until the ulimit is raised.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Satellite 6.1 SNAP 8 on RHEL 6.6
pulp-server-2.6.0.11-1.el6_6sat.noarch
candlepin-0.9.49.3-1.el6.noarch
katello-2.2.0.11-1.el6_6sat.noarch
foreman-1.7.2.28-1.el6_6sat.noarch

How reproducible:
Reproducible for either subscription by activation-key or subscription by register and attach.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Subscribe clients to Satellite 6 hosts for 5000 times.

Actual results:
There was an issue with the backend service pulp: Pulp message bus connection issue.
(note: after around 200 iterations)

Expected results:
Successfully attached a subscription for: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, Premium (Physical or Virtual Nodes).

Additional info:
1.wsgi:pulp process appears to be consuming a large number of file descriptors near the ulimit -n (1024). Raising the ulimit and restarting katello-service allows the 5000 system registration test to complete.

# ps aux | grep "wsgi:pulp"
root 19937 0.0 0.0 103252 820 pts/2 S+ 14:36 0:00 grep wsgi:pulp
apache 22133 3.5 0.6 4589172 110300 ? Sl 13:47 1:42 (wsgi:pulp)
# ls /proc/22133/fd/ | wc -l

Comment 1 RHEL Program Management 2015-06-29 19:23:40 UTC
Since this issue was entered in Red Hat Bugzilla, the release flag has been
set to ? to ensure that it is properly evaluated for this release.

Comment 3 Alex Krzos 2015-06-29 20:05:49 UTC
I ran through the tests with Chongrui and watched the number of file descriptors on the wsgi:pulp process. It grew 10 fds each successive subscription. For clarity on how we accomplished a large number of subscriptions we used the following: (We can scale this on 1-10 vms depending on the level of concurrency of subscriptions we intend on testing)

1. subscription-manager clean
2. subscription-manager register --org="Default_Organization" --activationkey=ak-1
3. Repeat above x 5000

At 1023 file descriptors the process actually seg faulted and left the following in /var/log/messages

Jun 29 15:47:14 vtopt kernel: httpd[10828]: segfault at a8 ip 00007f6278afbcde sp 00007f625abfcc28 error 4 in libapr-1.so.0.3.9[7f6278ae4000+2b000]

In the past we witnessed it stalled at 1023 and all subscriptions were blocked until that process was restarted.

Blocked clients see the following:

# subscription-manager register --org="Default_Organization" --activationkey=ak-1
There was an issue with the backend service pulp: Pulp message bus connection issue.
