System log from journalctl

Description of problem:
When a PC is left idle for some, after unlocking the UI all previously open windows are gone. Processes are actually terminated.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
compiz-mate-0.8.8-30.fc23.i686
lightdm-1.10.5-4.fc23.i686

How reproducible:
Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Disable any form of power management from MATE (set "Put computer to sleep" to "Never").
2. Open few windows (MATE Terminal, firefox...)
3. Leave a MATE session idle until the screen goes black.
4. Unlock the screen with your password.

Actual results:
All windows are gone.

Expected results:
All windows should be there - as it had always been before.

Additional info:
This is a MATE spin-off F23 i686 installed from Live CD, using mate-compiz-gtk. Video driver is nouveau.

The processes are actually terminated (not just the GUI windows gone) - you can verify this by using ps. Moreover, the process shutdown is always unclean - do it twice with Firefox and it will show you the 'This is embarrassing' screen the second time - a clean indication that firefox did not exit gracefully.

Additionally, when the screen is unlocked, the list of windows in panel shows a "Starting Compiz" button for a few seconds - just like it does when I log in for the first time. So, it may be that something (lightdm?) is crashing the whole window manager.

The system log is attached (showing some interesting message regarding X.Org being unavailable).

Confirming that setting "Timeout until the screen blanks" in LightDM Greeter GTK Settings to "Never" works around the problem.

Comment 2 Assen Totin 2015-11-09 22:49:48 UTC
Hm, taking my last comment down - even this LightDM setting does not help with being away longer.

Something simply kills most (all?) X things - but few somehow survive, e.g., if I have a VPN connected, it remains connected (maybe NM keeps this away from X?)

Comment 3 Assen Totin 2015-11-15 12:27:43 UTC
Turning off DPMS works around the problem, so it is clearly something that aggressively kills all GUI processes when it attempts to sleep the video subsystem:

xset -dpms

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2016-11-24 13:10:30 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2016-12-20 15:29:37 UTC
Fedora 23 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-12-20. Fedora 23 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
