There is an upstream bug tracking this issue:

https://github.com/manopapad/proper/issues/100

According to commenters, the package does build with the current master branch but not with any tagged release. There is another issue requesting a release:

https://github.com/manopapad/proper/issues/114

Once upstream makes a new release that works with Erlang 18, I will be able to get it building here.

Upstream has not made a release, so I will need to alter the code downstream to build.
