undefined method `clear' for nil:NilClass  displayed in UI. see attached screenshot

Reproduced issue in 5.4.z (flash message contents "undefined method `clear' for nil:NilClass").

Confirmed that issue is functioning as expected in 5.5.z and 5.6.z.  The flash message states "401 Unauthorized".
