The corresponding upstream ticket for this is:

It is marked as fixed by commit:

https://github.com/stedolan/jq/commit/83e2cf6

This was released in jq-1.6, which was pushed to epel7 a year ago.  While I am not a jq maintainer nor did I push the fix, I'm marking the ticket closed to save others the time of poking the status.
