Windows 8 is a different operating system than Windows 2008. What seems to be the problem?

Its windows 2008.

Comment 4 Michal Skrivanek 2016-05-11 10:04:52 UTC
No, Windows 2008 is the server OS architecturally equivalent to desktop Windows Vista, 2008R2 would be Win7.

1) what is being reported as a version by guest agent (under VM->Guest Info subtab)?
2) what is set in VM preferences as Operating System?
3) what actual operating system is installed in the guest?

Comment 16 Vinzenz Feenstra [evilissimo] 2016-06-27 12:49:06 UTC
What is the cluster version and the version of VDSM on that Host?

To me this looks like a newer version of the agent but an older VDSM which does not support this os reporting feature.

Comment 17 Michal Skrivanek 2016-07-01 07:19:45 UTC
Seems to me they are in 3.5 cluster level

Comment 18 Vinzenz Feenstra [evilissimo] 2016-07-01 07:33:11 UTC
VDSM is definitely affected by this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1318657 which definitely indicates a 3.5 (or even lower) cluster with a 3.6 guest agent and considering the report of the exclamation mark a 3.6 engine.

@sapandit: Please still reply to Comment #16 thanks.

Hello Vinzenz Feenstra,
Sarvesh has moved to different team I am now following up on his case. I can see that the vdsm version for the customer environment is old vdsm-4.16.20-1.el7ev.
Also the cluster and datacenter compatibility is at 3.5. I have asked them to do the upgrade with the latest version of 3.6. I will share the results once I have the information from customer.

Thanks.

Thank you Ulhas, moving the needinfo back on you to mark that we are waiting for this info.

Hi,

I have a customer who is running RHEV version 3.6.8.1-0.1.el6 and faced with the same issue for which the information ""actual operating system type differs from the configuration" shows for his windows guest VM running Windows 2012 x64. The current packages that the customer has is currently running on version 3.6.8

Michal,

Thanks for checking this out.

Please can you let me know what additional information is required for this .

Comment 33 Tomas Jelinek 2016-08-11 06:53:18 UTC
so, we will need:
- guest agent version installed on the affected VM
- please make sure the guest agent is up and running
- vdsm version on the host the VM is running on
- ideally guest agent and VDSM logs
- configuration of the VM OS type in edit VM dialog (does it match the reality?)
- screenshot of "guest info" tab

Comment 34 Vinzenz Feenstra [evilissimo] 2016-08-11 07:34:45 UTC
@rabraham:

From the screenshot I can see that the customer is running that VM in a 3.5 cluster
that most likely means that there is a 3.5 VDSM running

For this feature to work without this warning the customer would have to upgrade VDSM to 3.5

If VDSM is already on a 3.6 version the culprint are the guest tools since there is the indication in the screenshot that the Guest tools are outdated

Once all those parts are updated this should not be happening anymore.
