Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Fabian Deutsch 2016-05-23 12:34:07 UTC
Description of problem:
in RHEV-H we used the product title (in /.buildstamp): "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor 3.6 Technology Preview"

This title made the anaconda window to exceed the available screen width (see screenshot).

Expected results:
It would be good if anaconda added a line break somewhere.
Or if it offers an option to specify the maturity level of a build (Technology Preview) in this case.

Additional info:

Comment 1 Brian Lane 2016-05-25 23:22:16 UTC
I'm not sure what can be done about the long title, but there is a IsFinal boolean in .buildstamp that controls whether or not the beta dialog is shown.

Comment 2 Fabian Deutsch 2016-05-26 09:25:30 UTC
Can't long titles be wrapped into a second line?

And yes, we are using the isFinal key, I was just thinking if an additional switch for a TechPreview might be helpful as well.

Yeah, I suppose. That sure is a lot of title, though.

Attached a screenshot of what it looks like with that long string in .buildstamp and some wrap properties monkey-patched in with gtk inspector.

What you're really asking for is a second title line. Besides this being a large change (another label in every screen, changes to how .buildstamp is created and read), it's bound to lead to someone asking for a third title. I do not think this would be a good idea.

As you can see I also centered it, since I thought it looked weird with two lines left justified. We may want to do the same to the "What language..." string below it.

Here's another possibility. Long titles are cut off if they do not fit in the window.

Comment 6 Ray Strode [halfline] 2016-05-26 14:18:16 UTC
You might be able to put non-breaking spaces (U+00A0 " ") in the string to influence wrap behavior, but regardless that string is just too long.

why are there two version numbers?

Maybe the tech preview part of the string should get taken out, and the words "Technology Preview" could get put in the place that says PRE-RELEASE / TESTING.

Maybe anaconda could check if the string is too long and use a different string ("Welcome to Installer" ?), or check if the string is too long and apply a compat/smaller style to it.

I wonder if a better solution would be to use a translated image file instead of text. Then the layout could be more carefully controlled and branded by the brand team.

That was my bad. I just stuck the string into .buildstamp using a RHEL 7.3 install disc, and I was really lazy about it. Pretend the 7.3 isn't there.

This missed 7.2.z -> 7.6; can we have a target milestone for this? 7.6.z? 7.7?

Comment 9 Jiri Konecny 2018-11-29 09:11:55 UTC
Anaconda is not doing Z streams but we will look on this issue during 7.7 planning.

Comment 10 Sandro Bonazzola 2019-06-14 07:23:34 UTC
Missed 7.7, I assume that if this get fixed for 7.8 it will be fixed also in 8.1 right?

Comment 11 Jiri Konecny 2019-06-14 08:47:44 UTC
Could you please answer the comment above?

Not necessarily, because 8.1 is on a different development period than 7.8 (devel/test phase ends sooner in 8.1 than it does in 7.8). However, even though there is discussion and some proposals here, there is no agreement on how to fix this. I'm not a big fan of wrapping the title on to another line. Ray's proposal sounds interesting, but I'd like to hear what you think about that, Sandro.

I think we are not using anymore "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor 3.6 Technology Preview" since now the product is "Red Hat Virtualization Host" and we are out of "Technology Preview" phase.
Being the title shorter this may not be an issue anymore.
Nir, can you please check if this is still an issue?

Comment 16 Nir Levy 2019-11-04 16:51:09 UTC
as for rhvh-4.4
welcome screen has a decent title.
