Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Matěj Cepl 2016-05-24 12:53:32 UTC
Description of problem:
When running fprind-enroll (both as normal user and as root; what's expected?) I get

 ~$ fprintd-enroll
list_devices failed: No devices available
 ~$

Yet, lsusb -vv shows

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Comment 1 Matěj Cepl 2016-05-24 12:55:07 UTC
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.fprint/2509 seems to indicate that it could be at least somehow supported, and https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint claims it is supported by the fingerprint project.

Comment 3 Matěj Cepl 2016-06-23 20:22:57 UTC
Actually, with kernel 3.10.0-445.el7.x86_64, fprintd-0.5.0-4.0.el7_0.x86_64, and
fprintd-pam-0.5.0-4.0.el7_0.x86_64, I get this even more confusing scenario:

matej@mitmanek: ~$ fprintd-enroll
Using device /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Enrolling right index finger.
Enroll result: enroll-stage-passed
Enroll result: enroll-stage-passed
Enroll result: enroll-stage-passed
Enroll result: enroll-stage-passed
Enroll result: enroll-completed
matej@mitmanek: ~$ fprintd-list matej
found 1 devices
Device at /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Using device /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Fingerprints for user matej on Validity VFS5011 (swipe):
 - #0: right-index-finger
matej@mitmanek: ~$ fprintd-verify
Using device /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Listing enrolled fingers:
 - #0: right-index-finger
Verify result: verify-no-match (done)
matej@mitmanek: ~$ fprintd-delete matej
found 1 devices
Device at /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Using device /net/reactivated/Fprint/Device/0
Fingerprints deleted on Validity VFS5011
matej@mitmanek: ~$

And the same goes for the GUI verification (my finger can be enrolled, but not verified).

Those are the same versions mentioned in comment 0. Did something change?

The best course of action to see movement on this bug would be to test the newer libfprint releases, as available in Fedora, with this device, as I don't have access to the full range of hardware, and that vendors do not provide specifications.

Putting on needinfo until a newer upstream release is tested.

Exactly the same results achieved with

libfprint-0.7.0-3.el7.x86_64
fprintd-0.7.0-4.el7.x86_64
fprintd-pam-0.7.0-4.el7.x86_64
libfprint-devel-0.7.0-3.el7.x86_64
