Description Robert McSwain 2016-05-26 13:50:59 UTC
Description of problem:
rhev-hypervisor7-7.2-20160413.0 unable to install on IBM 3850 x6, erroring out

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
rhev-hypervisor7-7.2-20160413.0

How reproducible:
100% by customer

Steps to Reproduce:
Attempt to install on IBM 3850 x6 with only local storage is available in RAID 1 configuration.

Actual results:

2.724341] ERST: Can not request iomem region <0x ba3e0000-0x ba3e1c00> for ERST.
3.904066] i8042: No controller found
3.917061] dracut-cmdline[548]: Warning Kernel command line option 'liveimg' is deprecated, use 'rd.live.image' instead
INIT adapter done

: [sdb] Assuming driver cache: write through

After this progress window is shown, but after some time it gives the error

: FATAL : Failed to mount block device

Expected results:
Installation succeeds

Additional info:
Using the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor release 7.2-20151221.1.el7ev build this only gives a black screen, never gets to a splahs screen. The rhev-hypervisor7-7.2-20160413.0 build seems to be getting further and at least giving diagnostic errors.

Robert, can you tell if the system was booted in EFI or BIOS mode?

Comment 2 Robert McSwain 2016-05-31 13:17:28 UTC
Fabian, the customer mentioned they are trying installation in BIOS mode. Thanks!

Comment 3 Douglas Schilling Landgraf 2016-06-09 20:28:14 UTC
Hi Robert,

We will need more info from customer.

Could you please try:

1. Remove 'rhgb' and 'quiet' from the kernel command line
2. Add 'rd.shell rd.debug' to the kernel command line
3. boot the hypervisor, it will generate rdsosreport.txt on path "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt".

Attached it to the bug.

Please let us know if you need any assistance.

We haven't such device (IBM 3850 x6 ) on our lab. so I did some test on ibm-x3650m3

Test version:
rhev-hypervisor7-7.2-20160413.0
ovirt-node-3.6.1-12.0.el7ev.noarch

Test result:
Install can successful, so I can't reproduce this issue.

Let us wait for reply from customer.

Just affecting vintage RHEV-H, thus moving to 3.6.

Comment 6 cshao 2016-07-26 09:13:47 UTC
Find this type machine in our lab(ibm-x3850x6), but still can't reproduce this issue, the installation and reboot/login both can successful.

Hi Robert,

Is there any other step can reproduce this bug?

Thanks.
