Description Daniel Miranda 2016-06-13 17:54:54 UTC
Description of problem:

UEFI capsule firmware updates fail on my Dell XPS 13 (9350) on Fedora 23 with recent kernels (originally tested with 4.6), after working earlier. The bug can be tracked to efivar, that seems to have issues with NVMe devices. The bug is already fixed in the git master, but unfortunately not in any published release.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

efivar-0.21-2.fc23. Also applies to efivar 0.23 on F24 and Rawhide.

How reproducible:

Always on my machine - a Dell XPS 13 9350 with a 256GB Samsung PM951 NVMe SSD.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Enable UEFI capsule firmware updates in the system firmware configuration
2. Attempt an update using `sudo fwupdmgr update`
3. Reboot the computer

Actual results:

No update is applied on reboot, and it's not possible to verify the status using `fwupdmgr get-results <UEFI-firmware-id>`.

Expected results:

Updates completes successfully and it's status can be verified on the next boot.

Additional info:

The necessary patches can be applied from the development branch to the efivar 0.23 sources and work correctly. I uploaded my builds of that combination to COPR and tested them with success. https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/danielkza/efivar-f23/. I will also attach the patches to this issue.
