Description Andrew Dahms 2016-06-22 05:28:41 UTC
The installation guides for CloudForms include a procedure on how to specify a remote database, but we do not provide instructions on how to actually set up such a database.

This will require the following work -

* Roll sections 2.3 to 2.5 of the Deployment Planning Guide into a single
section on planning for the database.
* As an introduction to the new section, explain that the database is used to
store information about the environment, etc., and the difference between
using an internal database and an external database.
  - Internal: On the same machine as CFME, accessed there only, automatically
              configured during installation.
  - External: On a separate machine to CFME, must be manually set up, and can
be a dedicated machine, configured as a cluster for more
              reliability.
* Add a detailed procedure on how to set up a fresh machine to act as a server:
  1. Install RHEL
  2. Subscribe the machine
  3. Install PostgreSQL
  4. Perform CFME-specific configuration

Comment 1 Andrew Dahms 2016-06-22 05:29:56 UTC
From Nick Carboni, on the topic of 4. above -

1. Whatever the docs currently say as far as postgresql.conf configuration
2. Install the packages "rh-postgresql94-postgresql-pglogical" and "rh-postgresql94-postgresql-pglogical-output" from the cfme yum repos
3. Add "host replication all all md5" to pg_hba.conf
4. Add "usermap postgres root" to pg_ident.conf
5. Add the following to postgresql.conf
  - shared_preload_libraries = 'pglogical'
  - wal_level = 'logical'
  - max_wal_senders = 10
  - max_worker_processes = 10
  - max_replication_slots = 10
  - wal_sender_timeout = 0

Comment 2 Andrew Dahms 2016-06-22 05:31:03 UTC
From Peter Larsen, on the topic of the database -

"You also need to setup a user. And the instructions needs to specify what rights that user should have."

We will either need to investigate an internal CFME database to check the permissions, or contact engineering for the instructions.

Moving back to 'NEW' and the default assignee to be re-triaged as the schedule allows.

Comment 14 Andrew Dahms 2017-06-15 06:04:37 UTC
Assigning to Chris for review.

Chris - this bug is asking for instructions on how to set up a database on a separate machine from a CloudForms appliance, and has been an important request not tied to a specific release.

Don made some progress with this, so I'll see where he got up to and if there is a topic branch we can use.

Comment 15 Chris Pelland 2017-08-28 14:50:58 UTC
This bug has been open for more than a year and is assigned to an older release of CloudForms.

If you would like to keep this Bugzilla open and if the issue is still present in the latest version of the product, please file a new Bugzilla which will be added and assigned to the latest release of CloudForms.
