Description of problem: Avogadro is completely unusable in Fedora 24 Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Avogadro 1.1.1 on F24 How reproducible: Install and open Avogadro Steps to Reproduce: 1. dnf install avogadro 2. Open Avogadro 3. See that it is openning, but almost all features are not installed. Actual results: Avogadro is powerful. It can perform geometric optimizations, generate inputs, crystal lattices etc. In Fedora 24 the distributed Avogadro comes missing almost all features and the "extras"" menu is empty. Expected results: Lots of features that are part of the package. Additional info:
Hi, nothing new here?
Basically, I took the Avogadro package only because its shared libraries are a dependency of Kalzium. As far as I know, Rex Dieter's occasional work on the package (as a provenpackager) was also aimed at that. If you think you can do a better job of maintaining the Avogadro package, I'll be glad to give it to you (also because I already stopped comaintaining Kalzium, I have kept Avogadro so far only because I am the primary maintainer, and in fact the only official one). I have looked at the build.log right now and I do not see it complaining about any missing dependency, so I'm not sure where the problem comes from (maybe the upstream 1.1.1 release is broken? There is a 1.2.0 release on SourceForge now that someone should look into anyway). Also, are you sure that the features you are missing are in upstream Avogadro (1.x) and not Avogadro2? Avogadro2 is a different branch that Kalzium is not compatible with, so it is not possible to replace Avogadro with Avogadro2 (at least not without a compatibility package for avogadro-libs), Avogadro2 would have to be submitted for review as a completely new package.
Hi, Kevin, unfortunately, I don't have the time to take any packages. I'm sure about the problems with Avogadro on Fedora, I'm a long time user. Avogadro 2 is a completely different software, maintained by another team, the development of 1.x and 2.x will go in parallel. My compilations for Avogadro 1.2 is failing in Fedora 24, but I didn't have the time to contact the developers yet (it is on my to-do list).
> I'm sure about the problems with Avogadro on Fedora, I'm a long time user. And it worked well in Fedora 23? Or when was the last Fedora release you found it working well in? We really need to figure out when it started breaking and why, if we want this fixed. And I'm afraid I'll probably have to orphan this package because I really don't have time for it, it looks like I'm doing a horrible job at maintaining it.
Yes, it was perfect on F23; today I'll try to recompile the F23 RPMs and I'll tell you the results.
Hi, Kevin, after a rebuild from avogadro-1.1.1-18.fc24.src and a fresh reinstall the package is working perfectly. I have no explanation for the previous problems, but looks like a simple rebuild should do it for you.
